8800 GTS 640 to...?

Hey guys, just after a bit of advice I guess.

I've my leadtek 8800 GTS 640 for just about 2 1/2 years now and I feel like it's starting to chug a bit - mw2 was pretty jumpy last night.

I am interested in getting a decent 'mid-range' card that will last me a year or so untill the GT300 and 58xx prices settle etc - then I'll do a complete system overhaul; does this seem like a good idea?

I was looking at getting a GTX260, games I play are cod4/mw2, css & other source games like l4d etc. I game on 1680x1050 at the moment, won't be changing any time soon.

Current rig is average, E4300 @ 3ghz (Think I need some PC8500 ram to push it harder) 2gb OCZ platinum (only running a 32-bit os at the moment due mostly to lazyness) asus p5b mobo and an ocz modxstream 600w powersupply.

Any thoughts or suggestions are more than welcome, cheers.

The GTX260 is a good midrange choice. Also consider a 4890 or 5770. They're all a good step up from the 8800 GTS, with the 5770 having the potential benfit of DX11 support.

Cheers all for the quick replies; much appreciated.
going to have a look at a few benchmarks between the 4890 & 260 and see what's what

source games tend to play better on ATI

crysis and GTA play better on nvidia

personally, I always get nvidia for my gaming pc, went from 8800gt to a 260-216, great upgrade :)

I'm not knocking ATI, but I wouldn't use DX11 as a deal breaker for a mid range card, any DX11 games it can play, aren't going to get amazing FPS anyway.

Look at reviews for the cards suggested in your price range, comparing certain games, and not just benchmark tools

Glad to hear that, I just made the jump and purchased a 260 :) been happy with my 8800 so can't see any need to move away from Nvidia - looking forward to the weekend now!

the gainward that u picked looks nice always thought if i ever upgraded it would be that one with the double fans :D , but for an extra tenner or so u could have had the BFG with the nice 10yr warrenty how to choose? i dont know

I have to ask, but surely for another 15 quid a 4890 would have been worth it? It's quite a fair bit faster than a 4890, and overclocks better too.

The 4890 has the roughly the same performance as the GTX275 not the GTX260. Nevertheless the 260 will offer a nice performance boost over your previous card.

Well I would have got the 260 had it not been out of stock.
I'm actually glad because after seeing some proper comparisons between the cards the 4890 seems to beat the 260 across the board - so I cancelled my 260 and ordered a 4890 last night instead haha :D

I got the powercolour one; only thing I'm sceptical about is I'm so used to nvidia drivers - quite like my digital vibrance so hoping there's an ati equivalent?
