Gainward GTX 260 GS - How do I unlink 2D/3D Fan Speed?

Title says it all. I have read some info on the net about it being possible to have a seperate 2D / 3D fan speed on the Gainward, but Expertool links the 2D and 3D fan speeds together when you choose Static Speed.

Also I cant use dynamic as that doesn't seem to want to go slower than about 40% in 2D which is too noisy.

TBH I'm really disappointed how much noisier this is than my BFG 8800 gts 640, given the number of reviews that said it was quiet :-(

Hi guys, no takers on this one? Has anybody out there successfully done a bios mod on these cards to reduce the default fan speed on the dynamic setting?

What I cannot understand is why there is a 2D fan speed slider AND a 3D one when they are both locked together and cannot be set independantly. It would be perfect with 30% for 2D and 40% for 3D but you cannot seperate the sliders.

At the moment I am running with their 'safe' clock settings so that I can use 30% across the board but that kinda seems to defeat the object of having a card with a built in overclock....

My 'Answer' is to run 'Dynamic' when gaming and expert tool fixed @ 32% when not. A bit cobbled together but it works :D

You dont need to bios mod, just set up some fan profiles that trigger at certain speeds in rivatuner. Its a bit of a fudge to setup but thats what i did with mine.

So I can use rivatuner to set the fan speed based on a profile; cool, i only ever used that to monitor temps and overclock. Will investigate, I dont mind a fudge, as long as it works and would prefer not to mod the bios

AgedIdiot; I take it you mean adust manually each time I switch tasks as the tool wont store seperate speeds for 2D and 3D unfortuntely, the sliders are locked together.

Yeah, you have to create some fan profiles, and then enable the hardware monitoring thingamy so that when the clock speed crosses a certain point, the fan speed changes. That's what I did with mine; I was also a bit annoyed at how loud it was. It's not loud loud (for that, get a 4890) but it's loud if you've got a quiet case.

I know what you mean, I do a lot of 2D work and so I had my case quiet as a whisper with 120mm fans and so on. My 8800GTS was also whisper quiet, even overclocked slightly.

I could kick myself tbh, the last time I bought a Goes Like Hell card from Gainward it too sounded like a tornado was in my room, but that was several years ago so I didn't make the mental link that Gainward's custom solutions are maybe always noisier than others.

Thanks for the advice, profiles sound fine for my needs; I dont mind it a bit noisier in games but can't deal with it whilst I am working..

Yeah, you can pretty much stick it on minimum in RT and it's almost silent. 25 or 30% or something, but obviously check that the card doesn't get to warm on that setting.

Have you tried msi after burner?

Not dealt with that before, looks like a shiny front end; I'll probably check that out as well.

I think I made the mistake of assuming that the Gainward tool was the only way of doing this, when in fact its pretty pants looking at what else is available ;-)
