Hi all.

First ever post in this section, go easy!

I'm looking into buying a car. Just trying to gauge what I can get for my money and see whether it's worth shelling out now or sticking to the bus for a bit longer to save up some more.

Basically I've got a budget of around £1k -£2.5k, and I'm open to any suggestions, cheaper the better but I don't mind shelling out if it's worth it.

The only other car I've owned was a 1.4 Corsa (1995) that I got when I passed my test and been a nice little run around for 4 years! I was pretty happy with it tbh, little bit too small if you've got passengers and not the fastest car on the roads but it served me well enough.

With this new car I was thinking of getting something a bit bigger, maybe astra sized, but nothing massive. Not too fussed about speed, anything above 1.4 should be fine. Only other real requirement is that I want something fairly reliable, money will be tight over next couple of years as I'll be buying a house so I don't want something that will be going to the garage every 5 minutes.

What would you guys suggest looking at?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've been having a look through autotrader (anywhere else worth looking at?). At the moment it's looking like a focus or an astra (both 1.6) for around 1.5k-1.8k. Anything bigger (engine and size wise), or more expensive than that seems to push up my insurance a fair bit. For those two cars the quotes are around the £500 mark which is acceptable.

There aren't many xzara's about by the looks of it, and along with the fabia, I'm not realy a fan of it looks wise. The passat is a bit big for me I think, there also aren't many about from what I've seen.

Any other thoughts?
Thanks again.

I had a C5 for a few years, if you could get a fuel efficient model they're fantastic. Renault are worth looking at too...

Cheep and cheerful - Fiat Panda.
