The issues they had with the early TDCi engines were resolved in the newer ones - they're completely different engines in the Mk2 Focus/Mk4 Mondeo than the Mk1 Focus/Mk3 mondeo.
The 1.6 is reasonable and capable of silly mpg figures, but the 2.0 is the one to go for IMO
Had a 1.6 TDCI 05 plate myself, great MPG, around town, lots of stop/start traffic would get ~45mpg, stick it on the motorway at a steady 70mph and you can expect to see 62+mpg.
Servicing, repairs etc are all cheap as parts are readily available and reliability wise the car was flawless for the time I had it (13 months).
