if i buy l4d2 in a shop will it still go though steam?

The reason i ask is getting it for xmas and it will be retail copy. But I want to add it to my steam account so its easy just to bin the cd and download from there on to multiple pc's i have like i have done with other games

And once you get it and install it, you may as well throw the cd in the bin because you'll never ever use it again, and you can't sell it on after. It will be available for download if/when you reinstall steam.
