Any of you 17 and insured?

*guilty* :o on very rare occasions (twice? thrice?). Have fortunately been OK so far.

yeah i'm guilty too, i think now it's out of my system i'm not so inclined to do it any more! i mainly drive 10 miles to work and back every day so i usually just bang the cruise control on at 70!

I completely agree, most people come out the car park flat out in a could have smoke.

I drive sensibly, I never show off to maes or do stupid speeds, its just not worth it!

At 21, I have never done a handbrake turn, as I feel with an old car that if I treat it badly then it will treat me badly (repair wise).

The problem is that 17 year old girls bump things, but 17 year old boys, as mentioned by cheets65 take out a wall/bus-shelter/signpost/newBMW when they crash.

Hrm, it depends on the brains/competence of the driver in question, IMO.

I've competed in various different forms of automotive sport since I was about 12 years old, and I spent summers driving around in our field like a maniac from an even earlier age.

When I got onto the road, I didn't exactly drive slow, but my biggest problem was the frustration of how slow my car was, and thus, I didn't want to slow down for corners, this led to a lot of LOOS etc. fortunately, something experience taught me how to deal with.

Once I got into a faster car, I was a lot more sensible, I still drove like an idiot on occasion, but knew the time and place to do it. Which is why at 23 years old, and nearly six years of driving, I've still not had an accident.

My other half takes a few hundred off my premium.

Mine is a couple of years younger than me.

Yup, this is exactly why they cost so much to insure - when 17 year olds stop driving like idiots, the premiums will come down and scott212 can stop complaining

I don't know why you're having a go at me I'm 21 and get perfectly reasonable quotes. It doesn't mean I don't have the right to point out that 17 year olds drive like morons and consequently the premiums are outrageous.

I'm not "having a go", but it's not exactly the first time you've complained about insurance being based on silly things such as risk

All you ever seem to post about is insurance and the Nissan GT-R.

Which is pretty bizarre given you don't own a car to insure and you don't seem to be shopping for a Nissan GT-R

I've never done anything like handbrake turns! A) i'd probably mess it up, B) i care about my car too much!

Only handbrake turns I've attempted have been a couple of times in an attempt to park in a gravel car park (no cars nearby), and they mostly failed :p

Haha :p you have a real thing about me and the GT-R. I find it a fascinating car hence the interest.

This thread wasn't a dig at car insurance it was asking for help and some of the advice has been really helpful.

Very tempted to get a decent first car soon, although it'll depend how uni goes over the next year. Funny how cars that would have cost me £2-3k to insure 2 months ago now only cost £800 because I'm 21 and consequently tick a box.

The girlfriends brother hasn't pass yet and insured with Quinn Direct for £850 fully comp on his provisional. Bargain if you ask me! My Polo (Same insurance group) cost £2000!

If you haven't passed, you can't drive by yourself (have to have an older driver with you) - that presumably brings down the premium.

it's horrible trying to get insured when you are younger.

21 Didn't make THAT MUCH of a difference to me, its the NCB that make the most difference.

You've really got to hunt hard and explore every avenue.
They like to lube you up over german cars too, phone is cheaper most of the time as well.

Hunt though, I managed to get a quote on a vw bora 1.9tdi 130 for 1400 odd, incredibly cheap, took days of hunting and experimenting.

And to those saying 17 year olds shouldn't drive, try taking a bus and you'll see why, no one wants to pay over the odds to sit next to a smelly person, or some **** playing music through their phone. Getting a car by any means neccasary is a must for some of us, hate buses with a passion.

I have direct experience daily with young drivers unfortunately. As an IT tech in a secondary school and someone who uses the carpark every 2-3hrs to have a breather (ok smoke :p) i see the general intelligence/skill level of sixth formers when they shoot in to the carpark at 30mph and attempt to drop into a bay, or race each other in little 1-1.4L engined cars that are older than some year 7 children, i will never accept a ride from say 80% of them. Already this term 3 of them have ran into bins and one crashed into a staff members car completely writing off hers and the teachers, another stacked his corsa the day after passing his test whilst doing donuts on a public road  They fill up the car with 6 people + in a Fiesta etc.. show no concern for other peoples cars by opening their doors and blamming in to some poor sods nice ride and generally act the fool. I love driving and hate to discriminate but i think the driving age should be raised. I know a lot of 17yr olds will be perfectly fine and careful drivers but it seems from the experience i have the majority are muppets.
