The Megahalem vs H50 Battle Royale Results

I've never seen the point in the H50 apart from novelty value, it cools no better and you have the potential reliability problems down the line. Not to mention it's more expensive assuming you will use aftermarket fans.

Want proper water go custom, want top air cooling get a Mega.

Wow. Nice write up. I'm glad I got the megahalems. What kind of a difference did you see (if you tested it) with just one fan on push. I'm considering getting a second fan but I'm unsure of how much gain I'll see from it. Is it worthwhile?

Nice review, i still like my H50, its lovely :D

I didn't test it with one fan, I was only interested in comparing the absolute best temps I could get with the mega vs the absolute best temps I could get with the H50.

Actually I spend $109 on my mega (unit + 1156 brackets + 38mm clips + fans + shipping)

I only spent $90 on the H50 (unit + tax + fans)

Both cool great, its more about the size of your case and your personal choice on looks.

You've still not got the best setup for that H50 no matter how many fans you stick on ^_^

I need to post a picture some day.

It's not at the back where heat from the graphics and power supply ends up, usually against a wall too for a start :)

Interesting review mind you.

Most people will save £20 buying a Mega + 2 fans v the H50 + 2 same fans, calculating extras into the equation is apples to oranges.

Lets revisit this thread in 6-12mths time and see how many H50's are still operational lolz.

here are some final pics of my system.

Looks bad here when its off...appears dusty & dirty, but it's an illusion & irrelevant since it's always on.

Here are the shots of what it looks like when it's on(UV on)

Good test! It's interesting to see just how close they are. Personally I'd go for the Mega, I prefer the look of a big manly HS. :P

I respect the effort but the test really needs to be done with more real-world fans than those. I could count the number of people on here using 38mm thick fans on my fingers!

What would win given a more representative Amber or Yate Loon?

These tests were run to see the absolute best temps possible with the mega and the H50. They were also done for overclock.net and most people use 38mm fans there. If you want the best temps possible regardless of what site you are from, what country you are from or how old you are you will use 38mm fans because they produce more static pressure then 25mm fans which is what produces the best results for heatsinks and radiators.

I know the mega gets about the same temps with the fans running at 2000rpm and the H50 is the same, that is not conclusive because I didn't specifically test it in the proper manner to get conclusive results, but I have seen that just by messing with different settings.

Thank you for your input

About those 38's, what's the noise like when you're not running them for benchmarks?

I have them hooked to my mobo. One is plugged to chassis_fan set to silent and it runs at 2000rpm during Idle, which is not that loud but I can hear it if I'm using my comp.

I have the other hooked to optical_fan and set to low running at 1300rpm

I'm going to hook both fans to optical though to test the sound and it gives me better control, which I like.

Edit- Both fans running at 1300rpm after 5 loops of IBT loads at 3c higher then with both fans @ 3000rpm. As for noise, I can now hear my Panaflo fan over the cpu fans.

Edit2- Both fans at 2000rpm during 5 loops of IBT is 2c higher then both @ 3000rpm. As for noise, I can now hear my panaflo and my cpu fans equally. Good sound level to me, but not silent.

Thats an Excellent Test, mate. I swapped out the megahalems for the H50 some time ago and am very happy with it. Using 2x Apaches in push/pull, I also find the exhausting is better than intaking air. I have a Haf 932 so good airflow.
