The warranty agreement is with Dell as we have purchased the upgraded 3 year warranty pack.

I'd caution care then with these, sorry to say it, but the Alienware warranty/technical support is appalling, plenty of others with similar experience including having to threaten court action as they lie, decieve and even the supervisor team (Andre was the last one I spoke to) will NOT take ownership of calls, and if they do, they often will NOT fulfil what they promise (it's an almost regular thing over at that moneysavingforum thingummy!), and I was quite explicitly told the same tech support section and staff covered the M17, M17x and M15x, when enquiring over this.

I'd be wary of this Slackworth.

That said if you dont have any issues its not a bad price.

Price is pretty good for the spec - seeing as not so long ago plain old Core 2, no blu-ray and 1680x screen would have set you back similiar price.

Aye, I just meant because there are other companies who do similar specs for the same cost and dont call it special offer.
Im not saying its a bad price, its not it's decent, but Alienware aftercare is appalling and it had to be said, as the support is through them not OcUK after the first year.

That said at full Dell price the machine is a rip off, regardless haha

totally agree. Alienware are crap with their customer service. I read the horror stories aswell as experienced it myself.

damn it! why do you have to do this to me... /sells all expensive stuff.

Will there be a choice in colour?

Just red at the moment.

With regards to the Dell warranty - if people do get problems then we can give Dell a kicking from our side. It's amazing what threatening all our Dell business can do. ;)

Good to know you'll keep an eye out for people Slackworth, I hope you dont take my comments the wrong way, they're not at all aimed at OcUK but my complete lack of faith with Alienware support (in whatever european country its located), from experience and speaking to quite a few others with similar experience (didnt even take much finding!)
I had to threaten them with Small Claims Court/CCJ (after over 2 months of rubbish) just to get them to comply with UK law, and Im by far not the only one.

My girlfriend has this laptop, they're phenomenal. If Christmas wasn't so close I'd be buying one myself.

On the back of this would anyone suggest a laptop with this wort of spec and price? I was thinking that these were good laptops.

Around this price point and spec the main competitors are the Dell M15x, the HP Envy 15 (Only just come out, price is a bit lower but uses a slightly weaker GPU, longer battery though) or the Kobalt G860 (which is £60 more for the same spec EXCEPT comes with a GTX280m, is much cheaper than the Dell at full price mind)

That said Randel, the M15x is a decent laptop, its the after[lackof]care I have an issue with.

I saw one of these things recently at i38. It looks absolutely stunning no doubt. And the spec is amazing on this model.

Except, the processor.

1.6GHz is too slow. Period.

Will OCUK be stocking another model with a 2.4 dual core processor ? Because if they are then I will definately buy one of these things.

I would happily trade the Blu-Ray drive and two cores of the cpu for another 800MHz

You do realise the I7 chips are more IPC efficient than Core2 chips, and also overclock when all 4 cores aren't in use?

The I7 720 keeps up with the QX9300 @2.53Ghz in most tests (some it's faster)....so actually I wouldnt say it was too slow at all :P

This is NOT a core2 series chip, P4-->Core2 should have told you it's not all about GHz.

When only 1 core is in use it overclocks to 2.8Ghz IIRC, if 2 cores are used it hits 2.4Ghz etc etc. You'd need to check the exact figures as I cant remember them :)

The I7 is without a doubt quite a bit faster than a Core2Duo 2.4Ghz chip :D

Ok, im kinda clued up on computer hardware but im not quite understanding what you just said.

What does that mean? And overclocking laptops is almost certainly a really bad idea.

***EDIT***

Ok based on edit of previous post, I get that. So if you are only using one core then it automatically overclocks itself to 2.8GHz, two cores to 2.4GHz. Im onboard with that.

I'l see what I can find benchmark wise.

Read up on mobile I7, its an automatic part of the actual chip.
The mobile I7s are a completely new design of chip compared to the Core2Duo/Quad line. They run 4 cores at a lower speed (with more efficiency, higher Instructions Per Clock), but when all 4 cores aren't in use, some cores are shut off and the rest overclocked automatically by the processor itself. This is a design feature of the chip.

Its why the I7 mobile chips specify a nominal frequency and an overclocked single core one, as I remember Intel call it Turbo Boost. :)

These are a lot faster than the P8400 etc, as I say the I7 720 keeps up with or beats the QX9300 in the majority of tasks ;)

Beyond that, overclocking in laptops isnt a particularly bad thing if the cooling is good enough, which varies from laptop to laptop, its the temperatures which cause issues if people arent careful.

Oh and the processors are hyperthreaded too, so nominally your system will see 8 seperate threads to play with at once.
