I bought a case for £21 about five years ago that it would fit in with about 2" to spare.

I wonder if they will release a 5990 on 32nm tech with 1GHz clocks sometime next year.

wouldnt surprise me tbh. When you think about it our computing power has really been taking off the past few years. Considering the 5870 is around 2 x 4870's, and the 4870 was released only a year and a bit ago....

well I have to admit...that card looks sweet as...and I would really love one but 2x 5870s seem to PWN it in most areas where games are concerned...my only problem with 2x 5870s would be the heat consumption where 5970 is much cooler in comparison...still wait to see how prices fair come next year cos I wont be buying anytime soon...

2X5870'S even at best right now will be £600, this card should be £450, though it likely won't be. As of last night the exchange rate was a healthier than normal 1.68 dollars to the pound, which might help us out in that regard. Its far better value in general which is good for us. Considering the crappy yields and issues TSMC are having, the inherant increase in cost per core lower yields bring the fact its considerably cheaper than 2x 5870's is a very welcome surprise to be honest.

As for size, and how ridiculous some people think it is. If you can think of a magical way to reduce pin count, the required amount of pins to provide enough power to the core and memory bandwidth with less traces do go patent the idea and make billions over the next several years. If in fact you don't know how to magically make all the things above happen, realise intricate PCB's with increase number of traces, components chips and power REQUIRE more pcb real estate and so cards will continue to get bigger. They've been increasing in size from one generation to the next, for 15 years, its hardly unforseeable. Go out, by a huge stonking case if you intend on running high end gfx cards and don't have a problem.

I'm sorry but even with a stonking great case the size of modern cards is becoming unreasonable. Not only that but the power consumption is also incredibly high, even after all the optimisations they made. It was bad enough when cards started requiring two slots but now they're not even able to fit into many gaming cases. Still, my case is pretty massive - I'll measure it later but I'm pretty confident it will fit, and I have a 1000W PSU to back it up. It's more concern about the direction things are headed.

One would fit inside the Antec P182 if you remove the top hard drive chamber, but then you cant have a 12cm fan next to it. A pair of 5770s is all the power you need for 1920x1200 with 4x AA, I still find getting a pair of 5800s rather silly. 5850 is the single card price / performance king, 5870 is the most powerful single card, and duo 5770 is the overall best value for the money.

I suppose dual 5800s will be good for multi monitor and extremely high resolution gaming, but who really needs more than a 1920x1200 24-26" monitor anyway :p.

People in the top 1% wealth percentile would do I assume.

I do agree. It is just a race to have the single most powerful card.

Size doesnt matter when ATI can beat Nvidia with a monster sized card every few years.
