I'm spending a week at Sunderland Uni (MTC) this week so I've been using the A19. It's a friendly little road where everyone likes to get close and exchange niceties on their journeys.

Anyway, coming home tonight I'm in the fast lane doing 60-70 following a line of traffic that's been slowing down and speeding up every mile or so. Then the car ahead of me seemed to stamp on the brakes. I was far enough behind and applied the brakes OK. Then the guy to the left of me decided the juicy big gap I left was too tempting and sped up into it only to find himself heading toward a parked car.

I locked up as he did, then he went left into the slow lane leaving me sideways in the fast lane having gone onto the muck and kissed the barrier. Looking to my right I have traffic coming toward my car at 70 in the dark and I suddenly realise how dangerous this is as they can't see my lights.

5-6 cars swerve into the slow lane and manage to avoid me and my minds racing trying to think what to do. So I stuck my thumb on the horn, thinking they'll maybe hear me even if they can't see me.

Well the next car managed to slow to a crawl and I backed off the muck and got back on the road to get to the next turn off by the american diner/petrol place.

I only have an 8 inch scuff on the front bumper to show for it but it was bloody scary for a minute there.

A19 is lethal around Sunderland between Wessington way and the A690 and even more so in the rain. I try my best to avoid it.
Glad you're ok.

The A19 was chaos tonight apparantly, Teeside way... you didn't cause it did you ??? :p

Not guilty :p That was a three car mess on the flyover apparently. I took the Norton turnoff which is where I met the tailback.

My eldest took 2 hours to get home from the Boro.

I've promised myself my next car will have ABS. I don't know if the use of the horn actually did any good but it seemed to. Next car is going to have a loud horn too.

Yea that part of the A19 is like dog eat dog, absoloutely insane on there sometimes, was supposed to go to Newcastle tonight and it was closed I believe tonight

It is incredible the lengths people will go to to shave 0.25 seconds off their journey. I had a woman undertake me on a big roundabout in heavy traffic and - obviously - pouring rain as i was signalling to come off. A few minuites later i saw a guy in BMW drive over a mini roundabout to overtake a car going around it - vboth wanted the same exit.

Rushour really is madness.

I don't know what the fast lane and slow lane is, but seems like a close call. Good to see someone decided to pull into the space though :/

Ouch! Typical motorway users there. Random anchors on, lack of lane disci"OOH LOOK A GAP IN THE FAST LANE!"...

I once had a tankers rubber mud guard go under my wheels in the outside lane on a bend in really wet conditions. The wind must have blown it into the dollys wheels which ripped it off sending it in my direction. I ended up facing the wrong way on the muddy bit a couple of inches from the barrier. The conditions were so poor I couldn't see what was coming towards me to get facing the right way so had to call the police. Rather embarassing.

The A19 is a pussycat ;) The only bit it gets a bit savage is around the tunnel.

I drove down to 'boro last night and the rain was a bit heavy, other than that i've never had any problem with the A19

I drive the A19 between Middlesbrough and the tunnel frequently. Haven't had any problems in my 2 years of driving but it does get lethal in the fog around the river. Tends to flood in heavy rain also which can be scary at times.
