Car for a very short commute and some fun at the weekends?

The Lotus may be a bit raw and harsh, or the VX220 might be?

Would I? I know nothing about this car sector.

They are both as raw and harsh as each other really. My comment wasn't really meant to be taken seriously as it really is a car you already know you want.

A Honda S2000 would be a much more suitable buy in this sort of area. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1357572.htm is very very cheap. This is standard sort of price for a 07 plate. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1346687.htm (should be able to bring him down into your budget.)

I had my heart set on a VX220/Elise S2.....drove them both and loved them to bits, but could be a bit too raw for what you are looking for.

How about an S2000?

You need to decide how raw you want to go, but the suggestions in here pretty much stick, except the Leon.... any jumped up hot hatch isn't going to cut it, why compromise when you don't need the practicality...

Nissan 350z would be a softer option (but non the worse for it, and definitely not in the practical category)

Honda S2000 is a bit of a middle ground. (are we in boxter money here? probably older than you would want to go...)

Elise/vx220 being the raw option. After this unless you fancy going to work in a Caterham you pretty much there.

I have the exact same situation, except my budget is lower, so I got a mk1 Mx5 and have plans to turbo/supercharge it, far from a soft option, but when you start talking of modifying cars we open a whole new category.

Oakesy I think the Leon was meant to be a joke.

Hmmm S2000, I do quite like the look of them. I'll add it to my list as well as the 350Z, cheers.

S2000
VX220 N/A / turbo
Elise S2
350Z

Of course I want to suggest the 350z, but I think the styling of the roadster just takes it out of the equation if you are looking for a convertible. If you can get passed the looks...or fancy the fixed roof.....the V6 engine, performance and comfort should put this in good standing for you.

I think you would be more happy with an S2000 if you are looking for a convertible which is an inbetween option as Oakesy says.

Sorry I can see how my post could be misconstrued, I meant Lotus but given that the VX is more Lotus than Vauxhall, I guess you could say the same.

If he wanted an Elise variant he would already know.

I know what you mean, but if he has no exposure then a test drive will determine this.

The sensible option might be an RX-8, and saving the remaing £8k/9k. Fuel economy shouldn't be issue given the distance you're driving. Then if you're bored of it after say a year, you can swap it for something else without depreciation being much of an issue. That way, you get to try two cars for the price of one, and you can defer squandering megabucks at the present time.

Wow really? These are £15k already?!

There's even one for £14k on Pistonheads (got 100k on the clock though)

The 2.7s are pretty cheap, maybe because they're pretty low spec as standard (17" wheels, no leather, 5 speed box etc)

Bit boring though? Would he delibrately want to wake up early on a Sunday to go drive an.. RX-8?

I'm liking the look of the Elise. It's just that bit cooler than a VX220.

Obviously I need to drive them both.

I'm also considering selling my Golf MkVI...bought it for £17k and looking at Autotrader and Pistonheads, I could get feasibly get £19k for it (4000 miles, 5 door DSG, 160PS petrol).

Then I could get a 2005/6 Audi A3 2.0 TFSi and still afford an Exige or a Z4 if I wanted a bit more comfort after the test drive. Hmmm, endless possibilities!

So, something you can use for a short commute every now and again, and will be fun at weekends. You need to widen you horizons. ;)

Sensible suggestion

Or for a different type of fun at weekends...

0% depreciation suggestion

Or this looks a hoot

Low cost suggestion

I appreciate these might seem daft, but what would you prefer, another post with exactly the same 2 seat sports car suggestion? Driving fast is against the law - so why not have some legal fun. I like to think outside the box.
