Office 2010 Public Beta

Install was quite slow, the Web Apps are a bit hit & miss (although what works is nice)

I quite like it though from the first hour of use. The "Send a Smile" thing is a bit weird however with two faces in your system tray.

I think I was a little premature about the conversations thing.

Yes it sorts your emails into conversations, but you still have to click each email to actually see it. I was rather hoping it would be more like GMail in that I could view all the emails in one view, with tabs so I can switch between. It is a small gripe though!

Either way it is still much improved over 2007 and below as it does show your replies [sent emails] in the conversation groups in the inbox pane.

So far I quite like it! I haven't played with much else yet.

I also agree the two faces are a little odd! :/

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't see it on MSDN yesterday for some reason. Interesting to note that there are x86 and x64 versions this time around.

it's popped up on my TechNet account.

hopefully it'll give me an alternative to Office 2003, which i love, but i don't love having to install three service packs, a dozen updates and THEN install the 2007 compatibility pack every time i reinstall.

i hated office '07 btw.

one of the guys installed it a couple weeks back but pretty much binned it off instantly when outlook wouldnt automatically send/receive mail with exchange. still a fair bit of work needed yet by the look of it so no real point us testing it for now..

you not made a slipstreamed version then? if you run

setup /a

that copies the files into a folder. you can then patch the setup files with the service packs. it's been awhile since i messed with 2003 but it was fairly straight forward.

The 64bit version is really, really fast. I like it, more minimal than 2007.

It refused to install as I had some Office 2003 components installed (FrontPage2003 for example) so I had to uninstall that, install 64bit 2010 Office then reinstall FP2003 which worked out fine.

I didn't see an expiry for this, is there one?

October 2010 i think

Could someone do me a favour and post a link to the outlook connector for Outlook 2010 32 bit. I'm getting an error when loading outlook, that I can't resolve until getting the connector. I can't just do the upgrade connector option from within outlook as it closes the app once I ok the error message.

Thanks

edit: Not to worry, I found it.

Outlook 2010 = EPIC FAIL its rubbish, it looks nice its quick but for me it cannot do imap it gives me an error every time I try to move an email. It then moves the email although leaves a copy behind. Some of the icons are not finished petty i know but come on its an email client and should do most things email without any problems at this stage. Uninstalled and back to the old version I think. Tried this on a couple of machines and it does the same thing. If anyone knows of a fix then I will change my mind and actually start using it.

Gib

I know this is a little unfair as I have not given any of the other products much of a chance but my email is used all day, the other products less so. Hence I cannot stand it atm.

And I suppose you have used the send smiley option to report the issue to MS so it can be fixed in the final since this is a BETA?

Hey Gib it's not unfair at all I only really use outlook, word and excel and couldn't care less about the other components.

Worth keeping in mind that it is a beta and that you do have the functionality to report a bug or feature you don't like quite easily. If you don't report it then it may never get fixed.

I sympathise though, if this didn't work well with my mail and the other half's then I'd be straight back to 2007.

edit: too slow.

Yes I have posted a reply with a nice screen shot and a good moan about the imap, yes its a beta but you would think the email functionality would be a little bit further on even at the beta stage.

What functionality does Outlook 2010 offer over 2007? Hopefully Out of office balloon notifications will be scrapped in place of the old notification box in 2003. We have users who turn their out of office on then forget because they are too busy when they get back and leave it turned on. Before a box would appear in the middle of the screen but now just a small balloon.

A few other big things like not being able to print the first page of an email (without exporting to html) instead only being able to print 'memo style' and odd/even pages. What the hell is wrong with microsoft??
