TV Licence required because i have a computer?

No, you were lied to or more likely asleep at the raining.. Phone them up and read their website or email them, they all answer the same way.

YOU do NOT have to prove anything. YOU do not even have to let them in.
THEY have to prove you are watching TV. which is very hard to do. Just have a TV and a roof aerial does not cut it in a court of law.

Then I will beg to differ, the only way to prove it is for you to have a T.V and use it to watch a live broadcast and have no license and see what occurs.
I can only go off what I was told and the evidence I saw whilst I was there which for me is enough but obviously not for people on a public forum, no worries I have a license.

I don't need to I used to work there, I went through their training

Don't you think it even slightly plausible that the training would be skewed towards encouraging people to get a license. The general policy seems to be "if in any doubt at all, get a license". That's not how it should be - those who have no reason to pay for a license shouldn't pay.

Most of TV Licensing's tactics are based purely on fear. That's understandable because they have very little power in law - in the vast majority of cases scaring people into paying up is the only practical option. Doesn't make it right mind, and neither does it justify unfounded claims that people need a license when they don't - either from current or former employees.

You can safely ignore TV licensing letters and nothing bad happens. I know, I've done it. Mind you, I do have a license - their computer system just had a major seizure and decided that because the name they were given was one letter different, I therefore couldn't possibly have a license.

But what about what we're being told? What about what the TV Licensing people are stating on their own website? Is it all a lie? A conspiracy? And you're the only one in on it?

That's not what this thread is about.
But even If iI did his. They have to prove I'm watching TV and with out a warrant (which they can't get without some evidence) they can not gain access without you ketting them. The only wya for them to get evidence is if you decide to let them in, or they can see the tv from the outside and record it.

But as I said this thread is not about watching tv and not having a license. It's about owning computers, Tvs and other equipment and not wathcing TV. In that case you certainly do not need a license and the TV licensing board will tell you the same.

No, you can read there website, phone them up or email them and they will all correspond with each other. You do not have to go by what you were told.

Why what are they telling you really ?
They state that if you don't watch live broadcasts then fine you don't need a license.
They will however assume that as you own a T.V and live in britain that you will you that T.V as intended. They will require you to have a license.
If you claim you dont need a license and an inspector comes rounds and believes you can use your piece of equipment to watch tele then they will make sure you get a license or a license and a fine if you want to push it.
They are a pretty mean bunch of people at the end of the day and quite un-fair in the way that they do things, don't be lulled by what they say on their website, thats the cheery public face of tv licensing.

Ring them up and give them some grief and state that you will never buy a license, a sure-fire way to get a knock on the door. Have a chat to who turns up and report back your findings.

Tomorrows Daily mail headline:

Mollymoo delivers truth behind dark underworld of TV licensing.

I have emailed them and phoned them asking these questions before.

No one is saying give them grieve and saying they will never buy a license. Read the thread while you are at it.

Phone or email them saying:
If I have a tv, but it is not connected to an aerial, the tuner is de-tuned and I own it to play the ps3 on and I do not watch TV on it at all. Do I need a license.

The grief bit is so that you can get someone to come round and see you and you can ask them if you dont believe me.

As for owning a tv that you don't use for watching live broadcasts no you dont need a license, that doesn't mean they believe you and would be for an inspector to decide, till then your fine, it's a flaw in the system as already pointed out. However if they came round and you had a peice of coax hanging out of the wall connected to an aerial then they would likely make you get a license.
There was a large number of people who called to state they didn't need a license that then after a visit actually got one.

This is what I did and while the bloke on the other end of the phone was slightly shocked he accepted it.

This was a few months back now and nobody has come round.

9/10 the curtains in the living room are drawn so nobody can see into the house anyway so there would be no possible way for anyone to see if I was watching live tv.

So after all that you agree with us and the website then.
Not many people have a cable sticking out the wall, they have a socket. If there is no cable in that socket and the tuner is de-tuned you are fine.

It's not for an inspector to decide unless you want to stop the letters, even then they usually don't stop. They have no right to enter your property and they will NOT get a court order to enter your property with out any evidence.
