TV Licence required because i have a computer?

It's not for an inspector to decide unless you want to stop the letters, even then they usually don't stop.

I allowed an inspector in, soon after the last time I moved in 2006. He told me he was satisfied I didn't need a licence (I have a TV but not connected to an aerial and the channels are detuned) and that I wouldn't receive any further correspondence or visits for a period of years - he did say how many years but I don't remember. Over three years so far, and to date what he said was true.

to all those people laughing. can they please give me some examples of this amazing content the bbc is producing? apart from the nature stuff, which i already mentioned im at a loss.

Quite. I'm buggered if I'm paying it.

In fact I wouldn't pay it on principle even if the content was great, but it is a fact that most BBC output is garbage anyway.

wow, so many people i guess are posting without reading the first page of the thread when we all agreed that you only pay a license if your TV/PC/Console is capable of recieving LIVE TV as its being broadcast, this does not include iplayer/channel 4 OD etc.. but does include SKY, and will now obviously cover Xbox Sky Player, Ps3 SKy Player and the soon to be Windows 7 Sky Player.

You can have as many TVs and Digital Recievers, Sky Boxes as you want, as long as they are not plugged in to an ariel to recieve anything you do not have to pay a license.

I was under the impression the license also applied to Radio, but it isnt listed on their website and they say if your TV picks up audio but no picture then you do not need a license.

Mobile phones with 3g TV are also part of the license, no idea how they would enforce or control that though.

I know where Mollymoo is coming from though, as soon as you buy a TV (i remember from working in Tesco when i was a little sprog) you have to record your name and address, the shop then passes this info onto the TV licensing folk and if your address has no license and you purchased a TV you will recieve a call or letter saying they will take you to court IF you are watching Live TV in your house.

However there was talk of an internet tax (don't know if they called it that) which would encompass watching anything that required t'internet.

Yet I still got lots of phonecalls off inspectors who had visited people who declared they didn't need a license and realised that they did, usually on the back of a threat of a fine. I will admit though and maybe because prosecution was a seperate thing and had a seperate office above me that I never heard of anyone being prosecuted.

Given that you apparantly believed a complete non truth upon your entry to the thread, do you not think it's possible that perhaps a slightly aggressive man turning up, lying to people and threatening to fine them for something they might not need are actually just scaring the less confident into paying something they don't need, rather than actually just realising they need it.

Ultimately you do not need to prove anything to TV Licensing, the burden of proof lies the other way - they need to prove you are watching it. They can't do this. They scare people with BS stories about magic detection vans and so on along with apparantly (if you are a good example) lying to people about when they need one. Really though, they can't do jack **** to anyone and are nothing more than an exercise in legalised bullying.

Welcome to the government.

Yeah that broadband tax if/once it goes live will start at 50p and then sky rocket!

It's going to be interesting to watch them justify the increase as well.

Here's the latest on the broadband tax.

http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/broadband-news/government-holds-back-on-50p-broadband-tax

Only a matter of time as this is a huge money-spinner for the govn't. The tricky part is getting the system of money collection in place so you do 2 things, 1. Use an excuse like p2p and 2. make it very cheap so no-one notices, hence 50p. Once up and running, crank it up to £10 a month, hey presto - internet tax bringing in £3 Billion a year
The broad band tax is an idea to ensure tghe infastructure is kept upto date and allow everyone to get high speed broad. Which actually is a good idea, as it costs so much o install the network.

plus i cant even choose if i want to pay it. absolutely ridiculous.
You can choose. Especially as dvds are so cheap and all the OD options these days.

It will combat terrorism, stop climate change, reduce illegal immigration, the usual tripe they come out with to justify various tax rises.

Which is why it's only a matter of time because most people will fall for the spin, we are a gullible lot here in the UK.

I's not gullable.

it will happen one of two ways. Through a tax or teh end of cheap internet. either way you pay for it.

An ever increasing part of eh economy depends on he internet.
Internet services are ever increasing and the speed and infomation size is sky rocketing. Companies simply can not cope or afford this increase. without significantly increasing price or have a tax for infrastructure.

IMO a tax that is ring fenced is better than each company trying to build it's own infrastructure. As long as it is ring fenced and it is clear what it is spent on.
