TV Licence required because i have a computer?

The last time I heard someone believe detector vans were real was probably in the 1980s.

last I heard they were real and there were 3 of them. 2 reside in hotspots one of them being Liverpool 1 somewhere else cant remember where and 1 roving. As to whether you can detect and pinpoint a source of reception is beyond my knowledge.

How can they detect what tv is pulling a signal from a flat with hundred + rooms pulling a signal from maybe 2 arials?

They can't. They only catch stupid/unaware people that think they have to let people in, or self incriminate themselves, i.e. i didn't know everyone in our flat needed one.

I got a letter the other day, a red letter, me and another flatmate did, the other one who watches TV and has a license got a blue one, the one we got was like, M4*** IS UNDER INVESTIGATION!

Dont worry mate. They will keep sending letters and they will steadily get more threatening but it will amount to nothing at all. Happened to me last year (in Uni accomadation), happening again this year. Its a waste of paper really.

(No I don't have a license, I rarely watch UK telly now, the odd stuff on demand from 4 and BBC1 and 2 and thats it)

???

You only need one licence per residence so if there are 3 of you living in the flat you only need one licence between you, not one each.

They sent a letter out to my mothers old address the other day saying that her property was under investigation in big red letters, and that a TV license chap had been there and had reason to believe that a TV was being used on the property.

Which is funny, because the house isn't actually there anymore, its been demolished and has been for quite some time. Perhaps they think my mother is hiding a little TV in the letterbox thing we put up to catch the odd bit of mail that hasn't been re-directed. :D

Last I heard, evidence from such a source has never once been used in court, is that right?

If only they got this tough with benefit scroungers and other low life, rather than bullying decent people with their thuggish tactics.

THere seems to be a lot of points being raised here regards TV tuners etc and if you use them or not but no-none seems to mention the internet and as you can watch live on that if you have a computer and internet connection the theory is that you need a license.

it's been covered. You don't need a license if you own equipment. You only need a license if you watch or record LIVE TV BROADCASTS. So you can watch 4OD, iplayer legally without a license. However to watch itv website, bbc news, F1 live on-line you would need a license to stay legal.

Exactly as I said "watch live" iplayer/4od etc are not a live services.

It's probably best to clarify that you can only watch the 'on demand' iPlayer services but not the live streams.

If you do actually watch them then yes, you need a license.

You do not need a license just because you technically just happen to be able to access them by virtue of having the internet but don't actually use them.

If you watch or record TV as it is broadcast, you need a license, regardless of how you are recieving that live broadcast (bar a few certain exemptions). If you are not using the live broadcast (watching or recording it) then you do not need a license.
