Which is more powerful 5770 or 4890

The only difference in terms of gaming power is the memory bandwidth. The HD 4890 has twice the memory bandwidth, and therefore performs better at higher resolutions. 18% better at 1920*1200.

The 4890 is more powerful in DX 10, but 5770 is more powerful in DX 11. Personally I'd get the 5770 for future proofing because next year is nearly here and there are some top games coming with DX11. Last point is it's cooler more power efficient and probably quieter too if the 5870's anything to go by for noise.

How can you even compare?

Besides dx11 features like tessellation give a performance hit. Check the tesselation demo going round.

So HD 4890 in dx10 is likely to be a lot faster than HD 5770 in dx11.

but the 4890 cant do dx11 so it wont be faster than anything in dx11

The curious thing about DX11 is that you don't need a fully compliant graphics card for it to run. DX11 will instead run in DX10 or DX10.1 compatibility mode (or something like that). So, technically the 4890 would be running with DX11 but some of the features, such as tesselation, would be turned off.

thanks for clearing it up toastor :) I think i see what you mean, dx11 and even dx10 seem to be options in the games, everytihng seems to still be dx9 games with smatterings of dx10 and 11 eye candy :| consoles blow....

Tesselation, Compute Shader 5 and more would be lost. That is the meat of DX11, so no DX10 cards won't run DX11, not even in "compatibility" mode.
