Modern Warfare 2: Single player story discussion *SPOILERS*

Just finished it. When i started it asked me if I wanted to skip the disturbing levels. I said i didnt want to skip them but im wondering what levels it would have skipped apart from maybe the shopping mall massacre

Gunning down lots of unarmed people in Moscow airport with an M249 SAW.

It still feels like Time Crysis. Levels like the Favela just feel like an un-ending wave of stupid soldiers respawning out of the wood-work. The new blood screen thing is also awfull. You get clipped once and you almost can't see anything! And you can forget about being tactical and not getting hit because there are always 5 enemies respawning on a nearby rooftop waiting to rain down on you (To be honest, as with the first one, most of my qualms lay with the Marine/Ranger missions, not the SAS/141 ones).

Loved how they introduced Price, that was awesome. Few missions were just really pleasing (Oil rig one was good, as was the Gulag). And they certainly haven't lost their touch with how to make a good 'whole' game. From boot-upto shut down they feel like they've really thought about the story. The intro, the cut scenes, characters, etc, it's all top class yet again.

It was always going to be hard to top MW1. IMO they've fallen a little short, but a good game nontheless.

Edit: Why are people confused about the Shepard betrayal? He looses 30,000 men in the middle east, wants revenge. Goes about this by orchestrating events to create an even more militarised America, with no shortage of volunteers to sign upto his new war machine. He can only do this by someone attacking and causing massive loss of life on American soil. Satellite goes down in Russia (On purpose) giving them the ACM and means to bypass Americas defense network. Shepard retreives the ACM, at least then it looks like America still care about it. Puts a man next to Makarov for the atrocity at the airport, knowing Makarov would put it all at the feet of the American (I presume you don't infiltrate a terrorirst network by one day running 'The pit' and the next gunning down civilians with the head of the entire terrorist cell next to you - Explains why you don't just gun him down then and there). Russia invades the US knowing they can bypass their security, but it's still a fight Shepard thinks he can win. Which they do (Thanks to Price, the man you bust out of the Gulag on Sherpards orders). He now has the wakeup call (and blank cheque) to start forming his super military. All he has to do now is clean up all the "loose ends", people who knew who was really behind the airport atrocity (the main catalyst).

That's how it appeared to me. Pretty plausible (well, wrong word, it's still mental, but then you're talking about getting two super powers to fight each other, it's not going to be simple is it!)It should probabaly spend more time explaining this in the game. Some of the cut scenes are a little short and granted it is quite a cry from whats explicitly said and the paragraph above. I presume it'l be explained more in MW3.

Oil Rig mission is pretty cool, i liked it more though when it was stealth and take downs. When it turns into all out war it lost its edge abit.

I agree about the unending waves of soldiers at some places, not to mention my enemies being psychic. You can walk past a window and have your enemies not only spot you, but even identify you from any range.

This problem is a lot worse in MW1 though. In the old game they didn't even need line of sight and you could see bullets hitting the outside wall while inside a building, whether they could ever see you or not.

When common sense tactics don't work, you are forced to play the AI weak points. So if i spot six enemies ahead and killing a few is pointless, then I start wondering where the next checkpoint is and just run there and crouch.

So much for immersion.

What's left is looking at juicy graphics and amazing scripting. Good enough for me if it's THIS good ;)

Decent game, but I find the part where you kill innocent civilians in the airport disturbing and disgraceful, with all the **** going on in the world, to go this far, it is not on, game should be recalled and have this crap taken out.

I LOVE KILLING EVERYONE, bombs everywhere people flying everywhere.

WEEEEEEEEE.

In all fairness, it sort of was a mall as most large airports have whole shopping centres in them, and that's where you were. ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it, it was definitely as good SP as the first one, if not better. As others have said it was awesome to have Price back :D The ending was brilliant, well worth the money for single player alone... roll on MW3 :)

Both MW1/2 + WAW in my top five favourite games.

Errr what about the bit when you're playing as Soap and are meeting up with Price at the airfield, you kill countless men from Sheppard's unit and Makarov's...

I wasn't impressed as an overall...
With the first MW, I felt like I was in black hawk down... this time, I was definately Stallone or Segal or Arnie... and it didn't appeal.

5hr 15mins playtime on veteran, and I wasn't exactly rushing, that's pretty disappointing. Overall I think this was a pretty poor showing from IW/Activision. When I got to the end, I thought 'That should have been a £20-£25 expansion to the first game, not a £45 (rrp) new one. The drama over MP sullies it too, and as a customer, I'm generally feeling unloved.

Exploring my experiences with the game a little further;

There are a few really cool sections; The Infiltration of the Base in the snow I enjoyed. But is spoiled by the 'dramatic' climb in, and the flying snowmobile....

The controversial airport mission... it was a cut scene I could run around in; there's no decision to make, or particularly interesting combat.

The Favela mission, wtf were they thinking 'there's only about 300 armed men here, we'll run around solo?!' Didn't enjoy that, it just blew any suspension of disbelief I had. The CoD games have traditionally appealed more than MoH for example, because I never felt alone or isolated. I was one small part of the 'war machine', here it just fell apart.

Oil Rigs were ok; the breaching sections very cleverly done; but at times the open combat felt kinda sloppy.
Gulag was pretty good, and about the only set piece that I had to work at, with the shields, and guys covering the flanks well.

The Missions in the states were pretty cool, but the burger one 'run here, run there, run here again, go there' got a little repetitive... .50cal sniper though, so not all bad.

Clearing the house was ok, and the download of the intel was a nice mechanic, but the design of the house and the way the enemies attacked was a bit meh.

REALLY enjoyed the bone yard mission, finding the correct balance between stealth & force.

The abseiling knife kill was cool, as was the initial infiltration of the base. The chase kinda sucked... the ending... I'm not really decided.

You're not going to like this, but the rrp is actually £54.99. :D

yea the ending was great but i did feel at times it was me versus the world, which was stupid and annoying!
I think the AI annoyed me a lot too, especial when your team is a few meters from the enemy and i just pop my head up and they all change there focus to me! Do i have a sign on my head saying VIP or shoot here? that got really irritating.

The house level nr the end was extremely frustrating when downloading the information off the pc, must have died about 30 times here and it got more so annoying cus your crappy team m8 calling u to GO! "i cant ive got a constant spawn of crappy auto aiming bots coming for me, you ****" The amount of language coming from my room was disgraceful lol.

But it did have some great levels and the story was amazing i thought.
If i could change a few things it would be:

To improve enemy and team AI to be more realistic.

Less of the rambo style game play in some of the levels, i don't mind killing about 60 people but on that Brazilian one i must have killed about a 1000 lol!

And the main one has to be dedicated severs in MP, there was no excuse for this and was the reason why i didn't pay for the game.
