**The Dragon Age Origins Thread **

Same here but I think I'm one of the few who who is disappointed with it overall.

I'm new to the more hardcore rpg thing. I quite like Dragon Age and might even go back and check out Baldurs Gate, but I'm quite aware that I don't know what level the previous games reached in order to compare them.

I think there's a certain amount of rose-tintedness on the go about Baldur's Gate. About the only area I can think of where Dragon Age is actually poorer is the main storyline, which is disappointingly generic, especially compared to the whole bhaalspawn thing BG had going.

After restarting the game with all the races and finally reaching Denerim after freeing the mages, dwarfs and elves, i have a few things that are starting to annoy me.

There seems to be a complete lack of reaction to you being a blood mage, your NPC's only have limited responses to you, but most normal NPC's in the world don't.

The templars don't react either........

There is no use at all for the last blood spell in the tree, it cant be used in conversations and you can mind control your own party members, which them 2 i feel are massive oversights.

Very disappointed in the lack of variable armour styles and weapon styles, it feels like there are about 3-5 different types of armour, most just shaded another colour.

Mana Clash is the most overpowered thing in the game, you can do around 2k damage to a single target!

Force field is also another overpowered spell, but that is mainly down to the AI rather then the game.

Arcane warriors are basically god mode, with the entropy healing aura and life siphon and some shield spells there just a walking steamroller.

This is still the greatest game i've played in about 5-6 years, but the issues listed above i feel have been massively overlooked.

I agree with most of them, particularly the lack of differences between armour - and some downright ugly armour such as Dragon Armor that was part of the pre-order pack, it's fugly!

Rogue is exceptional though, duelist/bard with max two handed weapon skills tears anything to bits using two full sized weapons. Also finding it far more fun than my blood mage who like you didn't seem to have any really useful skills other than health- mana conversion!

I would say not to bother.
You won't like it.
Gameplay is great but it looks old, and we all like the best graphics don't we.

Just keep the illusion, BG ?.
A great game you never played.

I dunno, I stuck it on a laptop for the summer hols this year, and played it a lot. I'd say if you've never played it before the story would keep you interested.

Yeah I can imagine not recommending Planescape Torment to players newish to the genre because that takes a lot longer to get going. BG games are still worth a blast though.

On second thoughts,,,,,,,, this would be the best way to try it out, as a long term love affair.
But you still won't like it because it is old.
Us oldies don't mind but you will if you are 30 years old or more.

That is just a guess.

We like to remenisce, so things look better than they really were.

I still play it occasionally, using Tutu to bring it up to Baldur's Gate 2 spec, and it's still perfectly playable. Not everybody is obsessed with graphics.

I played through BG2 a few months ago - still as awesome as ever. Graphics don't look that bad at 1680x1050!

With regards to class imbalance issues in DA:O - its something that affected BG2 aswell. Remember the Monk? After about level 15 it became pretty much untouchable. In some ways, I quite like it - its nice to find an average/poor class that flourishes later on.

Its like the Rogue/Archer - Arrow of Slaying can one shot most normal enemies. And the "Ranger" specilisation is great. Getting the 4th tier unleshes the big bear, which makes an awesome tank.

okaay - ive only played this for about 20 seconds but wow im already getting that vibe.

Everything on max 30 - 60 fps solid :D Very beautiful graphics imo. tell you what ill post pics next time im in game. Coz i was so surprised as id heard this game wasnt a looker.

No we don't. Baldur's Gate is still the best western RPG ever graphics or no. I'm in the process of replaying it now using Tutu and it looks fine, i'd go as far as saying it's rather pretty for a 2-D game.

not exactly :p

Planescape Torment > BG2 > BG1

An excellent game though you are in for a world of hurt if you try to tank things before you get a proper healer. :( The combat feels a little sluggish for my liking though everything else easily makes up for that.

coupla random screens - v impressed with how smooth everything is.
