Should I buy Windows 7?

why will it increase in 2010?

Probably to generate good sale statistics. As when Vista was released the retail sale figures were used to show how well it was doing against XP release. That's what I read on this forum anyway. Also a good incentive to try and move the XP entrenched users.

Didn't find anything on Microsoft site, but here is a BBC News page that states £150 for Home Premium (retail) in January.

Europeans who want to get hold of Windows 7 but have not bought a new PC will be able to buy it at a discount.
In the UK, the Home Premium edition of Windows 7 will be £79.99 until 31 December 2009. By contrast buying this edition
after 31 December will cost £149.99.

That's it. I'm sold! Even if it didn't work properly now it would still be worth getting now before the price hike & waiting for MS to iron out any problems. I'm ordering the Home edition when I get paid next week & casting my doubts to the winds!! My PC seems to be running like a broken poofter at the moment & a fresh OS install is on the cards. May as well give Windows 7 a run out I reckon. I wonder if it will work with all my hardware & software? I doubt it very much. I guess I'll have to start polling around the manufacturers websites for Windws 7 drivers. Good!

Just ried the Windows 7 upgrade advisor;

It's not all good news;

I guess most of the devices I have do have Vista drivers. So am I right in thinking these should work under Windows 7? This also shows Aero won't with my my graphics adapter. Again I guess this could be a driver issue, although I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card soon anyway.

The most difficult part will be backing up all your files from your computer onto a removable hard disk and deleting the drive contents so you can install windows 7 if you are on xp.

As for drivers, well windows 7 is pretty good on that front, after install i could use all my devices and play games straight on without installing a single driver, anything else is normally found straight away on windows update.

And also about office, you really don't need to buy ms office when there are plenty of free alternatives that work with office files, the best one is from sun microsystems - openoffice.org

also windows live has a lot of free applications too.

All my files are backed up on 2 seperate back-up drives. No worries there. Can I not just do a fresh install of Windows 7 during which I format the HD (much like you do when installing XP)?

Not sure about Windows update sorting out drivers for my devices. The Windows 7 advisor said half my stuff wouldn't work! But does 7 use Vista drivers? If so I think I should be able to get Vista drivers for all my devices.
