Cleanest 205 ever.

I havent really improved the grip on mine, just a plate diff for when the inside wheel lets go and less torque steer.

I have retained the original hooligan lift off oversteer handling!

Not being rude, but how old are you?

Just because I didn't really understand nostalgia at all until a few years ago

Don't get me wrong I'm not against modding cars in any way. I just think mint standard examples should be left that way as if you're modifying it you are probably gonna replace all the knackered parts anyway. I can see both sides of the argument.

Maybe we have different views because you were around for the GTi launch and I wasn't, but I still can't understand how practical modifications such as modern brakes somehow ruins the recipe of the 205?

Who said it ruins anything, I didn't. As I said we are looking at the car very differently, you obviously thing a quick hot hatch is a quick car, I don't, I see it as a nippy car. The brakes on a 205 were fine, the engine had plenty of power and the car was great fun in it's day and though there is no argument its possible to make it quicker or more efficient, it isnt going to make it more fun, I promise you so to me its pointless. Modern cars have reduced the fun and increased the performance but no question a modern car will be quicker.

It's why I prefer a GT3 to a GT-R.

My choice was rebuild a knackered engine/gearbox, or do a really good swap. I am sure that guy did a full restore, then decided to upgrade as well.

I am really pleased with how it has turned out.

Cool, wouldn't do for us all to be the same. :D

I drove our 1.6 gti (rolling roaded at 116bhp by the guy who bought it off me) for a year before putting the mi16 in.

Got to admit, I much prefered the mi16 engine- same engine characteristics as the 1.6. Mine made the book figure of 161bhp at 7200rpm.

They're not stupidly fast, ~6 seconds to 60 and I believe around 15 seconds to 100mph... but the pure feeling of speed/nearly dying really adds to the excitement. Will keep up with the majority of hot hatches nowadays.

What on earth has caused you to make the assumption that I think Hot Hatches are 'fast cars'?

To be honest, you've pretty much proved my point for me. The brakes and Engine were adequate back in their day... Just like Leeches were an effective medical treatment. Times change ;).

Just out of interest, do you think that no car whatsoever can be improved upon from the day it left the factory?

GT3, you Sir are very fortunate to have what looks to be an absolute minter of a Rallye, I'm very jealous mate!
How have you got on in the year that you have owned it, has it required any time with a spanner? And have you partook in any driving trips other than the back-road blasts?

For me, I echo Housey & GT3 with why we love these 'classic' hot-hatches. The purity of feel through the steering, throttle & brake pedal with a playful chassis coupled with modest power from the engine & of course they are light weight!
Even such things as bolting on a sticky set of modern rubber can detract from what these cars offer, although I would argue that a decent set of brake discs & pads are quite acceptable!

You seem to be emphasisng how much quicker the engine modification would make the car. I don't doubt that, but I am not interested in comparing it to other hot hatches away from the lights or on a 1/4 mile or even across country. I want to get in, drive off, have some fun and come home, I sense you are missing this.

I am proving nothing, just that you are taking your view and believing it should be mine. I sense you are actually missing my point completely.

Nope, never said and don't believe it. It's a law of diminishing returns. I don't want a car to be as quick or quicker than modern hot hatches, it is a total irrelevance to me. I grew up with epic braking distances and lightweight cars with lots of fun but not a great deal of power, I can see their appeal having come through generations of cars that have got quicker, comfier, heavier and massively more capable.

From personally owning and running both a standard 1.6 and mi16 engine I don't think it in any way detracted from what these cars offer... If anything (like I said above) the mi16 was more fun.

Hmm not keen on the wheels, steering wheel or zorst but it does look well looked after - I'd personally prefer one that looked stock but thats just me.

Not just you. I love 205s but to be honest, dislike that one quite a bit...shame as I'm sure it performs well.

Tis the 1.9 I want anyway, so that's nearly a massive 10bhp or something quicker :D

As I keep saying, each to their own. Chap I know has spent many thousands on a 205 using the standard engine but getting it to 180bhp and I KNOW it's going to be epic.

Was it just the engine that you changed? Or did you have to follow suit with a suspension, brakes & tyre upgrade?

I can see the benefit of having a more reliable engine as nobody wants a car-sized ornament! But surely by fitting an Mi16 you lose some of the sparkle of 'working' for the power plus your actual road-speed is ramped up, which, as myself, Housey & GT3 have commented, is not what we want from these cars.
