Want a phone good at emails, internet, plays music, maps, camera.

Over here in France the Iphone is all teh rage and all the shops sell it. So its hard not to buy it.

But at 45-80 euros a month and 189 euros for the phone, its not cheap.

What would you say is a phone better than the iphone?

Palm pre, HTC hero or hd2 are all possible candiates in my eyes, I've just gone from an iphone to the pre and I'm not looking back :)

I have also changed phones recently and looked at the iPhone (amongst others) but thought it expensive and locked to limited providers unless you hack it but has plenty of "apps" available - but many of them of limited use.

Purchased a HTC Touch HD at much lower price that is network free, works well as a phone (something my friend have commented their iPhones are not the best at!), integrates with outlook better and with an 8GB card fitted now also runs sat nav for all of Europe and North America and has enough space for a reasonable amount of music for use in the car. Also uses standard USB to mini USB lead for charging, linking etc. and works extremley well as a HSPDA wireless modem for my laptop - recommended.

It honestly was the multitasking in the end, as funny as it sounds I used to watch youtube videos while in the bath:p

Getting 6 minutes into a ten minute vid, only to have someone text that needed an immediate reply was getting annoying. It means either closing the message and ignoring your friend/partener, or texting them back and having to quit out of the video your watching. When the text is sent you end up back at the youtube homepage when the app is relaunched!

That's only one example, there are others, like playing a game you've downloaded or looking for somewhere on google maps. If you need to respond to a message whilst doing that you'll loose your progress :(

doz you have actually just persuded me not to wait for the 3gs on vodafone now

i would find that awful too. now just have to hope they get something else great in before my upgrade is due next month

that is top of my list. and just waiting for a few more reviews from users

shame its wm though.

was thinking it would be nice to get android 2, but i guess thats months off

Yeah, what I was thinking, but it does look very good. Very long review (40min) here so you can see a lot of the UI:

thanks, i wathced that yesterday funnily enough, and it does look good

one other problem i have at the moment with it, is that i am on orange.

orange dont have it, and i dont really want to leave orange

so i was guessing that i would have to buy the phone elsewhere unlocked.

or wait to see if orange, would infact get this phone or not

Same dilemma for me. I'm on O2 and don't want to leave, but they can't even come close to matching the T-Mobile/Vodafone prices (spoke to 4 different people as well). Requested my PAC today (contract runs out 1 Dec) and will just buy from one of those soon.

so your actually walking ?

or just trying to bluff them and get a better deal ?

i might have to pop in to a shop and have a look at this up close, as i dont think im getting the scale of the thing in the videos

i have an omnia, when they first came out , and i hated it, so i want to make sure that this wouldnt have the same feel that i just didnt get on with on WM

but from what i have seen HTC have done a nice job at hiding all the WM stuff in to the background

Yeah I agree about the Win Mobile look, really bland once you get deep down into it. Like you say though, the HTC HD2 does a really good job of hiding it - Infact I really like the look of the Sense UI.

I was torn between the HD2 and the Pre, in the end the Pre won due to how efortlessly WebOS handles multitasking.
