Whose council has banned Christmas?

Yes in Dundee as mentioned in OP: http://www.thecourier.co.uk/output/2009/08/23/newsstory13657028t0.asp - though no mention of religion just trying to make money.

I'm more concerned there is a "cultural quarter" to Dundee, I lived there for about 8 years and had no idea that it existed. Either they hid it very well or I'm just shockingly unobservant. :o It's great they didn't even involve the Lord Provost either according to your other link, that's about par for the course though.

You're perfectly right though, it's not a religious issue, it is purely a monetary/business one on the face of it.

Christians steal Christmas from pagans and secular folk. Other secular folk try to take it back. Yet more secular folk complain. Daily mail blames blacks and muslims. Genuine Christians facepalm. Hilarity ensues.

What's so good about Christmas?

N.B. Bah humbug

Family, great meal with said family, great music, everyone saves money and buys each other stuff, followed by another dinner on boxing day with other bit of the family and then you look forward to the new year!

whats not to love?

edit: late night shopping also, amazing.

Meh, I have pretty good meals with my family every week... Great music? Don't make me laugh, mutual present giving for the sole reason that "it's Christmas" is as lame as it is an empty gesture.

Sure it's fun, but it's nothing special.

Christmas is not even religious anymore anyway lol. Especially on the high street.

That would be because "Christmas" has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity anyway.

Christians shouldn't even want to celebrate it either, it's a Pagan festival which Christianity is against (paganism).

As a "British Culture" thing, it's nonsense really, it's an excuse for people to see their family and to quell their guilt of spending very little time with their family.

The fact that people need an excuse to spend time with their families is more of an issue that people trying to change what it's called.

To those who celebrate it, what does it matter what it's called? It's still the same thing you believe it to be.

Does spending time with the family, meals, music and more meals suddenly become better because they're on the 25th of December?

Late night shopping is amazing? Seriously? Actually amazing? Not convenient, nice, alright, "agh crap, even more time for my money to sucked from me at high pressure?".

The time you spend doesn't suddenly become better but it might be one of the few times in the year when most of the family can get together. Whether the reason is that geographical location makes it difficult to see everyone regularly, whether it is down to having a very busy job or whether there is some other reason that people don't see their family often the fact that they can do at Christmas makes it special.

+1

For me, and I assume most people... Christmas is just a time to go "home" and spend time with your family. The whole winterval and christmas thing is irrelevant. The same thing will happen at both of these events, lights will be switched on, fireworks will go off, at a christmas festival you might get a bible bashing by a preacher :p but what, it lasts 5 mins, then the lights go on and you forget.....

As an atheist I "celebrate" christams, by having a nice meal with the family whom I hardly ever see.
