FreeviewHD (DVB-T2) starting 2nd December

My USB TV Tuner is capable of reciving HD apparently, but does not have this logo, does that mean it won't work with HD?

 what a silly statement. You don't have to get a new box and it's a way of getting HD. Wow you need new technology to take care of new technology. Wow how disguising of technology companies

.

the bt vision box hasn't been out that long. HD's been going for a while, they should have built in the functionality, but knew that they'd just release a new box later to get you to buy yet another piece of kit....

They aren't even going to have boxes ready for launch date, so it hasn't happened like That. We are the first country using these specs, the rest of Europe is still testing it, before being rolled out.

Freeview has been around years and years.

Chances are your tuner will decode H.264, but only tune to DVB-T. UK will be using DVB-T2/H.264 so I very much doubt your equipment will work. Unless they start transmitting H.264 on the old DVB-T network.

What about ‘product X’ – the advert and specs say it can receive terrestrial HD?
There are some set-top boxes, tuners for PCs and even a few TVs which claim in their specs to receive terrestrial HD. At the time of writing, none of those is compatible with the system that will be used in the UK, though they should work with terrestrial HD broadcasts in France and a few other countries. If an advert says a product works with freeview HD, the most charitable interpretation is that they mean 'free-to-view HD terrestrial broadcasts in countries using DVB-T'.

yeah freeview has been , but when was the BT Vision box released? only a couple of years ago. surely at that stage they should have looked ahead and thought, will it be able to take hd signals at a later stage? no?

Seeing as the rest of europe has a different (older) HD system and we are the first country to adopt this system. Then NO. Also theirs economics as well. whos going to spend an extra £100 on a HD freeview box, when HD dates haven't even been released and that's assuming the Hd format had been choosen back then.

yeah that makes sense, i suppose they didn't know back then that the tech would take off and to then make support for it. still you'd think that market research etc would tell them what tech to plan for in the future.

doesn't that make a product more sellable tho, saying that its 'future proof', "just think when the country goes HD, no need to buy new kit, yours already supports it" etc?

No, due to limit demand, the price of the boxes would by very high compared to normal ones and thats assuming hey new which system the UK would go with.

Surely at that stage YOU should have looked to see if the product was futureproof. Blaming everyone else for your own failure is pretty pathetic.

actually i don't have much money to hire market researchers etc in order to plan for future purchases like big companies do. thats the point i was trying to make ;)

thats true, if there was a massive diff in price, then of course everyone would buy the cheaper ones. oh well, will just have to wait and see how much BT try and charge for their new box.

What's it got to do with market research?
It's down to two things
1) cost
2) knowing what format will be used. All these current Hd boxes are for mainland Europe which are on a different format and wont work in the UK.

You don't need market researchers.

Its like buying a TV a few years ago - if you had any sense you'd get one which was HD ready. Your issue is akin to buying a non-HD plasma TV in 2005 and then complaining a few years down the line because the TV manufacturer didn't build in HD capability!

And as I said - there are free HD channels (BBCHD and ITVHD) on Freesat already - and you don't even need a box if you have a freesat enabled TV. Just can't see what the fuss is about, as there are already free HD channels available.

Freesat doesn't have Dave. Dave is one of the best channels.

Hmm according to the PDF Hampshire does not get FreeviewHD until 2012 ...
So far as I can understand it, only Londoners who receive the Crystal Palace signal will get Freeview HD in time for the World Cup, everyone else in the Greater London area will have to wait for 2012 which seems a wee bit odd for the largest conurbation in the country (BBC)

... At least HD boxes will be as cheap as DVB-T ones now :p
That I VERY much doubt; they are new, different technology and will initially be in short supply - they will be more expensive.
