Attempted burglary - spec me a CCTV system!

Wow, what an eventful day it's been so far!
I was sitting at home in the kitchen at 10am this morning and heard an alarm going off. I looked out across the field towards my dads building yard/offices (he owns a building company which is the next property along, about 200 meters down the road) and saw a grey Land Rover driving at speed up the drive...
I ran down the road and the vehicle came sliding out of the gates straight onto the main road almost losing control...
Unfortunetly I didn't have time to get in my car and give chase.

Anyway, this isn't the first time something like this has happened. My dad's buildings have been burgled several times now. Fortunetly this time it looks like the alarms went off before they could take anything but they did smash the locks off two of the buildings and saw everything inside... The buildings have some quite valuable building materials, tools and machinery which they now know is there so I expect they'll be back sometime.

How much would it cost roughly to fit a CCTV system?
I'd probably only need two cameras but I'd like them to be quite decent and reliable.

What equipment would I need?
I'd like it to be recording all day and maybe have a motion sensor at night or something? I haven't a clue what would be best.

Thanks in advance.

my boss recently bought a cheap camera system, it cost £300 from ****** i think, it came with 4 camera's and a multiplexer recorder unit. he says its absolute rubbish, people walking past in black shirts glow bright pink onscreen. and when it gets even near dusk, you cant see a thing on the monitor but a load of noise. i'd recommend against getting a cheapo one.

Try your local police - they may have a crime reduction team, who can help recommend what to get. Given you are a repeat victim, you may even qualify for some freebies!

First things first, do NOT get all-in-one IR cameras. They are crap. As above, they mess up the colours and give naff all vision outside of a small area that the IR hits. Also once a bit of muck settles on the camera the IR bounces back into the lense and blinds the camera.

What sort of area are you covering? Any chance of a sketch/snap? Got an old PC you can use for it? If you have, a couple of pci capture cards will do the job. recorded at 4fps recorded at 12.5fps

You can have wide and little detail, or tight and not much coverage, not both!

Sent you a quick message, about some general cameras, GSDog. Obviously depends on budget but several thousand will no doubt get you a better system. Depends on how much value there is to what you are protecting.

they will just wear balaclavas and the vehicles are stolen anyway.

seems pointless if you have an alarm which will scare of any have a go thieves , professionals wont care smash n grab without letting you see who they are.

stick some fake cctv cameras up will be as good a detterent

On the same track as Arknor, if you have a limited budget, it could be better spent elsewhere - security, vehicle tracker etc

Can you say 'guard dogs'? I'd love to see them open the sheds and find nothing but a face full of Anatolian Shepherd or similar. These babies are big, independent (don't need lots of owner interaction or stimulation), and they love to bite bad guys. Oh, and did I say they're big? :D

I bet you would get sued if they bit the intruder...

I daresay some hypocrite yob with a sense of irony would try eventually. That said, of the farms (UK) I know housing these particular dogs, nobody's bothered even trying to break and enter in the first place. One has to survive, in order to sue. ;)

Thanks for the replies and messages.

Here is a pic of the layout of the place. The red arrows are the buildings which were broken into - they are the only buildings secured with padlocks. They didn't bother with the other buildings which have more heavy duty locks.
The green blobs are where I think are probably the best places to put Cameras, they will cover pretty much the whole area.

It was 10am in the morning and they only had a Land Rover Freelander 4X4 so I don't think they were planning to actually steal anything. I think they were staking the place out and they probably plan to come back, maybe even tonight.
I've found an Infrared CCTV camera which I might temporarily set up tonight in one of the buildings if I can find a spare PC to record it with.
We got a call from the police earlier saying that another outbuilding in the neighbouring village was also broken into this morning.

What sort of camera are you using? We're also thinking of setting up a CCTV system and so this thread is very useful :D.

How well do they perform at night? I was looking at IR but after reading what you said maybe not.. we could position a light sensor to come on next to the camera to light things up a bit :).

Have you got security lights.

500W flood lights with sensors are about £8 in B&Q, maybe cheaper elsewhere. Fit a few of them and it will be like daylight when anyone approaches the building.

Put some nails in the driveway over night or some kind of defence maybe, if you're worried about them returning tonight

As above fitting some removable (but not too easily) bollards or barrier would be one of the most effective ways to reduce chance of being burgled.

I'd put up 3-4 highly visible dummy CCTV cameras and a smaller number of hidden (real) cameras.
