MTB Pedals

Hi guys,

One of the pedals on my bike (Scott Aspect 50) has broken. The pedals that it did have on are called: Xerama SP-872N.

If I buy any standard MTB pedals, will these all fit on the bike ok? Or do I need that specific type - finding it hard to find some to buy.

Any pedals will fit but you might need a pedal wrench to change them.

Should get away with a 15mm? spanner tbh

As said above any pedals should fit and you can use a spanner to fit them.

15mm spanner needed to remove old and install new pedals.

Be sure to get MTB and not BMX pedals though as they're different sizes, but in many cases look the same.

Er, no they're not, they are both 9/16.

Nah cheap bmxs with 1piece cranks run 1/2" pedals the same as kids bikes. Mtb being 9/16". Usually is a case of a 15mm spanner but some SPD/shimano pedals only have enough space for an actaul pedal spanner.

Most cheap BMX come with a 3 piece crank these days, which take a 9/16. 1/2" pedals come on £59.99 "looks like but isn't a" BMX and small kids bikes, but as the OP is after a new set of pedals I highly doubt he's looking for a £5 pair of kids pedals. Some of the aftermarket MTB pedals are actually just repackaged BMX pedals. Gusset Slim Jims are repackaged by Outland among a couple of others as a MTB pedals but are in fact a BMX pedal.

Well all i was saying was he needs 9/16" so he could go into halfords and get some without some retard handing him 1/2" pedals. I know most bmxs come with 3 piece thats why I said cheap bmxs like most of the ones halfords sell. Proper bmxs are win though my mates have a mongoose chamber and a eastern traildigger(i think).

Since the OP is asking about standard pedals, he may well go into a non-specialist bike shop which sells both sizes of pedals, hence my suggesting he check the size before buying.

Nope, maybe you should go into a bike shop and try asking? The only 1/2" pedals we have in the shop are in a box, on a shelf, in the workshop. About £5 a pair if I remember correctly, but it's been a long time since we've been asked for any. Any pedals on display, be they BMX or MTB, are 9/16".

So you do sell 1/2" pedals then?

I worked in a bike shop for many years, and I sold plenty of 1/2" pedals.

Perhaps there are more bike shops in the country besides yours?

I've just had a quick look on the Halfords website and there are plenty of 1/2" pedals for sale, most of which look identical to their MTB equivalents.

Doubtless the OP will ask which he needs when he visits his local shop, but it doesn't hurt to warn him does it?

That was my thinking. Asking for 9/16th mtb pedals will get him what he needs quicker. The shop I worked in also had loads of 1/2" flats but they were also in the tub lying through the back......I know halfords sell a few sets though.

lol V12 mags for a relatively cheap bike? Rather suggest some cheaper sealed wellgos. Someone after a decent pedal I'd suggest V12/soljam vipers/Mx 30s .

V12 mags may be a little bit overkill, but decent pedals make a huge difference. I hate riding cheap pedals that you cant trust to give good grip.
You can get V8s for <£20, might be worth a look?
