Week in New York alone - good idea?

Thats one of the things that got me interesting in Kiev actually, would love to see it, I know they do tours of Pripyat as well which would be amazing.

Yeah, we did a slightly condensed version:

  • 4 course traditional Ukrainian meal
  • Talk and information about the area
  • Stop at the monument to the firemen who died putting the blaze out
  • Various stop-offs on the way to the exploded reactor (e.g. coolant canal with LOADS of fish prospering in it) where the guide showed us different geiger counter readings
  • Stop next to/behind exploded reactor sarcophogus (crazy high radiation levels)
  • Visit to Pripyat and the chance to just wander around this very creepy, deserted town

It was very sombre, but intriguing.

I'm going for a week on my own on Feb 26th

Thats my Birthday :)

It was very sombre, but intriguing.

Cool thanks.

I just love the idea of a real ghost town, a lot of the tours (the longer ones) visit some of the more recognisable areas of Pripya, the Fairis Wheel and the Swimming Pool among others (Players of MW:1 will recognise those).

Oddly it was MW:1 that first sparked my interest in it.

We were in the Chernobyl area for 3 - 4 hours in total.

I think we had 5 days in Kyiv and then 1 day in Dnipropetrovsk.

In terms of time of year, I guess it depends on how you like your weather. I bet it gets very cold in Winter but summer can be pretty lovely. When we went last month, the weather was more clement than back here in England.

I guess maybe when it's a bit warmer might be better as a tourist as you'll want to spend time walking around above ground (although the Metro is good in Kyiv - every sign is in Cyrillic though!) to see the sights.

Also worth mentioning that the ladies of Ukraine dress exceptionally well and are generally very easy on the eye. Not that I was looking of course!

Has anyone stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC?

I was thinking of taking the new lady in the new year and booking a Concierge or luxury suite and wanted to know if it's 'over-rated' or are opulent as people suggest?

Just want to defend that fact that a week is NOT too long! I went for a week and could've stayed there easily for another, there is just such an amazing aray of things to do. Always something going on.

Thanks for the advice/encouragement guys, going to start looking into flights etc I think, see what I can find.

a week is maybe to long in NY , maybe split it with New jersey or something like that ....... or maybe Atlanta for the casinos ..... NY is awesome but you can see most of it in 3- 4 days , well that was the case 8- 9 years ago......

I assume you mean Atlantic City not Atlanta

I'd say go for it!!! without a doubt.
I was there myself for 5 days earlier this year and had a blast. I would recommend looking into getting a City Pass thou if you're wanting to do the touristy things like museums and stuff like that, it's WAY cheaper and less hassle as you dont have to wait in queues.

GO for it!!!!

My mum stayed there a few years ago and I think she said it was ok. It really depends on what type of hotel you prefer, it's an older style hotel with antique furniture in the rooms rather than everything being modern and minimalstic.

I agree with divaboy that a week is perhaps too long in New York, especially if you're on your won. The sights don't take long to get round, I'm sure I've done them all in a weekend and had time to spare for shopping/wandering around central park.

It depends I think - if you're going on a shopping/sight-seeing trip, yeah you can do that in a few days and a week is probably too long, but if you're going for a 'live in NY' trip, go and visit dive bars and nightclubs and see a bit of the real city (and the people in it), rather than just the obvious stuff, then a week is nowhere near long enough, you'll lose 2 days at least from being hungover/trekking back from Jersey City... :p :D
