Hi all,

I am going to be building a new PC for my sons Xmas prezzie, Mum is allowing me £825 for him,

My question is, Is there any point in putting in a 775 chip? looking at the Q8400, the reason i suggest this, i have more DDR2 Ram than i can shake a stick at so i could use up 8gb of OCZ Reaper to save some cash. If not i5 and DDR3 it is.
Probs. i5 750

Thanks!

i5 for a new build all the way. If you have plenty of spare DDR2 you could probably sell it and more than cover the DDR3 costs.

The price of ddr2 has rocketed lately.

Although that RAM would be nice, especially because RAM prices are relatively high at the moment, getting a new s775 system now is not really a good idea. The socket is dead. Sell the DDR2 sticks, should get a decent amount for them.

But why not go with AM3?The Phenoms are very capable CPUs and if the PC will be used for gaming the performance differences between the i5 system and the AM3 system would be very small. And not to say that AM3 will be a little cheaper.I could put a pc together to give you an idea of an AM3 system if you would like.

Only reason to buy a Phenom II is if you dont want to overclock as it will be just faster than a non overclocked i5 750.

If you do want to overclock the price difference between the platforms is so similar,it's just not worth buying the Phenom II.

Yes and no, depends what PhII you are talking about and what motherboard too! . . . Athlon II & 785G works out about half price of i750 (£65+£65) which makes the choice a bit easier! :)

The AM3 points posted are good ones , you can then utilize your DDR2 while saving money. This is something to seriously consider. I have seen the P2 955 for £118 retail :)

I personally prefer Intel components , so the I5 seems the best and cheapest route for me. To get the most out if it though and overclock would be required. If stock settings are going to be used the it might pay to look at the phenoms.

The Core i5 750 all the way for a new pc with that budget. May I also suggest that you take a look at the i7 920 and a cheaper motherboard to go with it if you are planning to overclock.

Socket 775 is still fine for building a budget pc by the way as it is unlikely you'll want to change the cpu over in later life without replacing the motherboard anyway so people saying the socket is "dead" have a moot point. Then again if you want to build a Q9xxx based socket 775 you ought to go i5 instead when you get to spending that sort of cash. Take a look at the E5xxx, E8xxx and Q6xxx cpus though.

For other budget choices take a look at the AMD range...
