**The Dragon Age Origins Thread **

Just finished, ending was epic. Really enjoyed the game, got immersed and really cared for the chars. play 90% of the game with Alaister/Sten, Shale and Lelliana who was epic in the final few battles with her bow..

Quick question, what affect does a failed attempt at pick-pocketing someone have on the game? I was expecting them to attack you (like in Oblivion, fun fun) and was rather dissapointed when nothing happened first time I failed :p

Just finished gathering allies and i'm now around level 18. Going to finish a few of the sidequests before I go to the Landsmeet, should be interesting :D.

I thought I had done most of everything at the different locations except deniram but I still only finished on 30%?

I think completion counts for all Origin backstories, quests, Character stories etc so its more of an overall completion stat rather than a playthrough one.

Persuasion (max) is quite powerful I find - I'm using it at present on my second run through the game. Lockpicking and stealing I can't see any use for though.

I lockpick just for the exp gain. The loot in the game horrible. Got two games and in neither have I found a second ring for Leliana.

I believe if you steal from the Merchant you meet in Lothering you get a pretty good high tier Crossbow which is nice early on.

But yeah for the most part Loot from both locked chests and stealing is pretty underwhelming. Still, it adds up early game when you really don't get much in the way of gold.

So far the only differences i've seen from stealing is
1. Duncan had a little chat with me about Sleight of Hand (my Rogue had gone around camp and stolen everything not nailed down, oh apparently Duncan has a Greater Nature Salve, so not worth the effort :p) and
2. Guards occasionally attack you when your travelling around Denerim as a random encounter. I'd like to say these are easy exp but Scattershot is ****ing irritating and frequently leads to my death by hitting me 5 times in half a second, especially when theres a total of maybe 15 of them. But that seems to be it.

Agreed that the rogue talents in general are actually underwhelming. Trap setting is too slow, and the poisons have been implemented poorly - if they at least stacked with weapon buffs it would make them worthwhile, but the minute use? Bleh.

And the loot itemisation is pretty dire in many regards. In my first play through I didn't find a single ring for anyone in my party. Ranged items are crap (ok the High dragon drops an awesome bow, but you can't take her on until quite a high level).

Has anyone bothered with the mods/hotfixes available through the Projects section?

Downloaded the Dexterity Hotfix (for those who don't know, (i think) Daggers are using 100% Str when they should be 50% Dex/Str, along with Shortbows been pointless, they were given 100% Dex, and Bows in general were improved damage/attack/critical wise, works for everyone including enemies = much more dangerous archers/assassins)

And the Respecification mod, great for getting rid of those useless talents/skills/spells that allies come with sometimes... *cough* Shapeshifter *cough*

Shapeshifting was really one set of skills I was looking forward to before the game came out. The casting time and weakness of the forms make it useless in combat though.

Then you get some decent forms in the Fade during the Mages Tower section which makes the basic forms look even worse and it's instant shapeshifting as well! Very strange design decision.

Now THAT I need to get :) Thanks for the heads up but where can I find it?

If you go to the Bioware Social Network and click Projects they're all in there.

Thats the homepage.

Thats the Respec mod. The Dex hotfix is sortof part of an external site called The Missing Manual.

Agreed, Shapeshifting was laughable when i actually came to using it. Then the forms in the Fade just put it down so badly, even as a little section the forms had some variety, could be changed to at will quite easily and offered some useful spells/skills.

However on that note i remember briefly looking at a mod in that Projects section that added another line to the Shapeshifter Specialization that allowed you to transform into a Drake with a few skills.

Edit: Not quite what i saw before but this may interesting you: http://social.bioware.com/project/818/

Make sure you max perseration on you main as if you don't you miss out on so much. Early on in the game in the first town there's quests that require potion making and trap making. You've pretty much got to make sure no one as the same skills apart from combat mastery. I'm going assume you'll need every skill at sometime or other to complete quests.

There's an overarching story, which mostly ends up with you killing a lot of stuff to achieve your objective.

Not sure what you mean by grinding quests in this regard, it's something I'd associate more with an mmo.
