I don't know about you guys but the DDR3 price rises really feels to me like being kicked in the guts everytime I am about to put together system based on an I7 setup. It's like being forced into paying now or we will make you pay in a few days if you don't buy your system.
When you build a PC you can't have one without the other. Core I7 920 CPU's were £245 inc vat each ( 6 months ago) while ram for the system such as DDR3 1600Mhz Tripple Channel was about £84 for a 2Gigx3 Kit and motherboards have either stuck or gone up in price. Graphic cards have risen in price slightly also.
Effectively it seems that there has been little point waitin for price drops a few months later as components are offset by other components which are rising and now that the 15% VAT rate will be expiring at the end of the year, the likelyhood is that things will just be even more expensive than they are now.
Whats the chances of Core I7 CPU's dropping another 45£ in January Febuary or even March. I can't see it even if they bring out the Core I8 or I9. All components will be offset by the 2.5 % increase back to 17.5%.
To buy a balanced I7 920 System of reasonable components, it's going to cost still in the region of £900 inc windows 7.
Some might say, well go buy a Core I5 based system then, well I would say that the price V performance bracket is not strong enougth for those who would benefit from the extra 4 threads (core I7) that would benefit those into 3D rendering or music production for instance.
AMD has for a number of years have not been able to compete with Intel in terms of raw processing power and therefor many would consider AMD not to be the most beneficial in these areas I mentioned. For games AMD are fine as many games are still unable to fully utilise all the cores available to them and rely primarily on the graphics card for pure grunt to push the framerate.
In conclusion when weighing things up it seems like you can cut your arm off to spite your face or spite your face and negate cutting your arm off ( Intel v AMD)
The only question is......... which is better ?.. The face or the arm ? ...Fiiiiight...
