I don't know about you guys but the DDR3 price rises really feels to me like being kicked in the guts everytime I am about to put together system based on an I7 setup. It's like being forced into paying now or we will make you pay in a few days if you don't buy your system.

When you build a PC you can't have one without the other. Core I7 920 CPU's were £245 inc vat each ( 6 months ago) while ram for the system such as DDR3 1600Mhz Tripple Channel was about £84 for a 2Gigx3 Kit and motherboards have either stuck or gone up in price. Graphic cards have risen in price slightly also.

Effectively it seems that there has been little point waitin for price drops a few months later as components are offset by other components which are rising and now that the 15% VAT rate will be expiring at the end of the year, the likelyhood is that things will just be even more expensive than they are now.

Whats the chances of Core I7 CPU's dropping another 45£ in January Febuary or even March. I can't see it even if they bring out the Core I8 or I9. All components will be offset by the 2.5 % increase back to 17.5%.

To buy a balanced I7 920 System of reasonable components, it's going to cost still in the region of £900 inc windows 7.

Some might say, well go buy a Core I5 based system then, well I would say that the price V performance bracket is not strong enougth for those who would benefit from the extra 4 threads (core I7) that would benefit those into 3D rendering or music production for instance.

AMD has for a number of years have not been able to compete with Intel in terms of raw processing power and therefor many would consider AMD not to be the most beneficial in these areas I mentioned. For games AMD are fine as many games are still unable to fully utilise all the cores available to them and rely primarily on the graphics card for pure grunt to push the framerate.

In conclusion when weighing things up it seems like you can cut your arm off to spite your face or spite your face and negate cutting your arm off ( Intel v AMD)

The only question is......... which is better ?.. The face or the arm ? ...Fiiiiight...

The fact is it is really difficult to build a truly bad machine by accident. And for 95% of people I would imagine the difference between a high-end AMD and Intel are very slight. Same goes with RAM, Graphics, Mobo etc, etc.

The only people who are going to notice these things are extreme enthusiasts, and lets face it, most enthusiasts spend a crap load of money on their hobby getting the cutting edge.

I think the massive prices are wrong, there is no need for it at all and we pay way more than in the US. But at the same time, if you want a high-end gaming rig or whatever, you should be prepared to pay upwards of £1000. Ever since I got into building my own computers around 4 or 5 years ago it was what you had to pay. Nothing has changed.

what about good ol' DDR2 RAM!? thats really expensive now, but thats the reality of life, prices do go up and it's something we just have to live with =[

Yep, the Kingston HyperX that I bought for £36 a couple of months ago is now £70+.
Looks like time to sell my no-longer-used OCZ Reaper!

Expect prices to go up in general, the UK and the USA are effectively printing money so the £ and $ are dropping in value. Inflation will soon take a grip so get used to it lol.

The lol doesn't really work there...

I don't mind paying more for quality components, what annoys me is that we consistently pay more for the same item compared to almost anyone else. If we paid the same price as the americans I'd be happy.

It's not OcUK's fault, it's from the suppliers, but it's still frustrating.

Prices are a joke & disgrace, they wonder why PC gaming is suffering.

Ive put off my rig till way after chrsitmas and maybe all together, i will look at prices in january.

Only in the pc world, does prices GO UP as tech gets older!

Price of DDR2 ram is absolute crazy right now.

Only dx11 cards gone up by £50.

People need to stop being fools and not buy at these prices then they are forced to offer value.

Whole industry needs a shake up. But enough mugs to pay these stupid prices so nothing will change.

Yep the price hikes are sickening and distasteful - needing to pay more for the same components as ordered 3 months ago is a bitter pill!

However believe it or not we do OK (relatively!) compared to Europe it seems - Ive been working in Belgium for over a year and colleagues have had PC and DIY gear delivered to my UK address, and then spent whole weekends driving over to collect, the saving was worth it. I think one factor is that in the UK we seem to have a wider and more competitive choice of e-tailers - it pays to shop around.

But compared to the US....

Supply and demand particularly at the moment, plus a pinch of "taking the proverbial!".

Tried to buy a classic car lately? How about an ornament from 1720? Lots of things get older as they get rarer, assuming people still want them it's bound to happen as they get rarer.

Weird comparison, you wouldn't spend more money for last years fashion items would you?

I just bought my pc before the prices started to go up so am happy I got in just in time!
