**The Dragon Age Origins Thread **

There's an overarching story, which mostly ends up with you killing a lot of stuff to achieve your objective.

Not sure what you mean by grinding quests in this regard, it's something I'd associate more with an mmo.

Ok, I meant in an MMO sense so go there collect x number of these then hand in then move on to next quest ect.

Not really, there are collection X amount quests, but they're mostly minor ones that frankly you'd miss if you weren't paying attention. Most of the large ones require you to fight through masses of mobs, kill several bosses and in some cases use your noggin to figure out how to get past the puzzles. Morality and decisions you make have quite an impact on how much of the world you can explore though.

Downloaded the Dexterity Hotfix (for those who don't know, (i think) Daggers are using 100% Str when they should be 50% Dex/Str, along with Shortbows been pointless, they were given 100% Dex, and Bows in general were improved damage/attack/critical wise, works for everyone including enemies = much more dangerous archers/assassins)

Yeah but it powers up the NPCs too. Made some encounters very tough so I took it out.

And the Respecification mod, great for getting rid of those useless talents/skills/spells that allies come with sometimes... *cough* Shapeshifter *cough*

All the time! No shapeshifting for Morrigan and stealing for Leliana!

How did you guys get over the tactics?

As soon as I saw the tactics screen in the game I wanted to cry. It looked a lot like the one in NWN2. That was bad enough, but its even worse in this game.

The characters either charge in like morons, stand back and do nothing, or a mixture of both meaning that the 'tactical' isometric viewpoint that all the BG fans (like myself) were getting excited about becomes redundant. You cant even see far enough to make it worthwhile.

Of course you can skip the tactics and simply micromanage, but this in itself is like a punishment, you have to do absolutely everything.

Am i missing something?

anyone else notice what feels like a bit of a memory leak in the game? Seems to slow down a lot, especially with loading times the longer you play. Find if I quit and reload it's nippy again.

I too experience the slowness later on in the game but I have never thought about quitting and reloading to see if that speeds things up. I've got the game installed on a Raptor HD and I'm getting this.

Yes you are missing something. Have a gander at the tactics group on the official site and you'll get some pointers. The system isn't ideal but with a bit of reading and fiddling you can get it working decently. You'll still have to pause and manage somewhat frequently though.

Yeah I get that too. A quick reload sorts it but after a couple of hours load times do slow down.

Can anyone tell me how large Dragon Age is to download from Steam? I am on a 2meg line and after downloading MW2, which took an absolute age, I try to keep file sizes down.

No idea on the compressed size (I got the DVD) but the install is 15GB

Can anyone please help. It feels like I'm dealing with total retards in my party. If I leave their behaviour on default they run after the darkspawn running away, usually dieing in 4 seconds, but if I change it to passive or defensive they often just stand their whilst getting beaten up or whilst I'm in battle :?

Mine downloaded about 15 GB.

For tactics, I find the default behaviour best for melee types, so long as you give them an initial target yourself that's beneficial and not some guy at the back of the next mob. The others were a bit too passive and didn't see much talent use. Casters and archers I keep on ranged.

As for tactics themselves I think they work great. I mostly use the default ones it gives you, and make modifications like...

If self health < 50% then use health potion least powerful

and so on. I'm playing on hard and using only slightly modified default tactics and not having to micro too much really.

Usually the same as you would any other game. You may have to point the mod installer to your steamapps folder, or manually place files if it's that kind of install.

I'm sorry I just don't understand. Sometimes we come to a room with 9 mobs in and I need to pull them out in phases, but these idiots just run in and die instantly. If I click them and try to run them back,..... the others just run in. If I put them on passive modes they don't do anything. Seriously Alister is useless, anything other than aggresive or default and he doesn't do anything at all. I have to click him to get him to attack each mob. If I'm trying to pull a pack round a corner the ranged usually just go in and start nuking.

Maybe I'm just used to playing WoW with real people but this stuff is beginning to make this unplayable.

If you have all of them selected they wont do anything without being told so use that while pulling.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Stealing if you don't really use her, can bring her in now and then to steal from NPCs in town.

I use her all the time. Was going to use Zev 2nd time through but leliana was nearly 14 when he appeared, so I'll stick with her. I took her poison and stealing off and gave her tracking, much more useful.

You can tell them to stay. The little icon below the party portraits does it.

Make sure you have Alistar/Shale set as a defender/default, Zev/dog/Stern scrapper/default, Leliana archer/range, Morrigan damager/range and Wynne Healer/range.

I would then change their targets to "Enemy: Target of main character". That way they attack what you attacking and don't run off.

Later on you should change the spell so they use the better ones you get.
