Morning all,

Had a pet hamster for over 3 years and she died about a month ago so went out and got a little russian dwarf. Kept him in the same cage after giving every piece a very good clean, in the same place of the house, didnt do anything differrently.

2 Weeks later we hadn't seen him for a day as he was very active and would always come and see you if you called him. Opened up his house where he slept and he had passed away in his sleep :(

Rang the shop where we got him from and they said if we took him in they would have a look at him and we could exchange him. So we got a different russian dwarf, gave all the cage a very good clean etc etc. Last night the same thing has happened again, tucked up in her bed and she has passed away. The night before she was running round in her wheel and eating out of my hand like nothing was wrong.

The GF is going to ring the shop again today and ask their advice. The original hamster we got was form pets at home, which i said i wasn't going to get another one from, so we went to a more personal pet shop.

I can't see it being anything we are doing wrong, since our first hamster lived in exactly the same place with the exact same treatment and she lasted over 3 years :(

I know there are a couple of people on here who keep hamsters so thats why i though id seek advice here :)

No gas leak or anything ? Something non hamster related that might effect them first.

Could just be a bad pet shop.

Could the cleaner you use to cleanse the cage etc contain chemicals harmful to the little blighters? It may take a couple of weeks to get into their systems.

POB - was thinking the bad petshop, going to go somewhere else when we get a new one, Think if we had a gas leak that had been going on for over a month i might now about it by now :p

Forde - Just used boiling hot water mate so can't really be that

Ozy - Don't fancy buying a new cage mate as this one cost us a fortune when we got it, the water bottle is new, why a new wheel?

Hamsters are not the cleanest of creatures so I agree with the new cage comment. Every hammy I have gets a brand new cage, new wheel, new ball, new water and food dispensers just so there is no chance of passing on the new babies any germs.

You went to Pets at Home and got one that lived for three years (a good knock).

You then got two from a 'local' pet store that died rapidly and you still prefer the 'more personal pet shop'?

It's probably just a batch of hamsters that had an illness, or the breeder isn't keeping them properly, etc.

I got two guinea pigs from Pets at Home 6 years ago and the second one has only just died. There's nothing wrong with Pets at Home, they will be using respectable breeders as the negative PR if it was unveiled that P@H were using pets kept in awful conditions and maltreated etc., would be significant.

You are not supposed to keep dwarfs in a cage. It's wrong!

Just because he is Russian doesn't mean you should abuse him in such a way. Get rid of your cold-war animosity!!

I've had 2 different hamsters in the same cage after cleaning it out even using same bottle ect never had a problem with it

Did you buy it from Your pets die at home (Pets at home)

Everyone I know thats had a pet from there (that has survived the old bag and wall in the back shop treatment) has died withing days/ weeks. the wifes had two budgies from there and both fell off their perch I had a homster from there and it also went stiff.

This reminds me of the Levis advert.

Kevin grew bored Very bored LOL

100% definitely dead? I only ask as my girlfriend had one when a teenager that they thought was dead and threw away (in the outside bin), turns out it was hibernating and putting it outside pretty much woke it up, they saw it rummaging around the bin the next time they went to put a bin bag in :D

ANIMAL CRUELTY! ANGRY TEENAGER THROWS LIVE HAMSTER IN WHEELIE BIN

LOL :D

Yup, perhaps its a bit nippier than they are used to, pushing it into hibernation.

My dad tried to lob one of my hamsters out one day. (When i was about 10!) He thought it was dead, put it in a box, to bury it, and it started screeching! He warmed it up in his hands, and she was fine for another year :p

See if you can put it somewhere warmer, and next time, if it seems to die, try warming it up for a couple of hours, before giving up on it :)
