With the launch of Microsoft’s new OS we wanted to look at how it performs in gaming, but also to check if the graphics drivers were ready. We all still remember the painful transition from XP to Vista when it came to gaming, particularly for the GeForces with quite a few months going by, in fact almost a year in the case multi-GPU cards, before NVIDIA got up to speed. What’s the situation with Windows 7?

OS's havn't had a large impact on gaming performance ever since multicore CPUs became available and RAM became cheap enough for everyone to have 4Gb for dirt cheap.

Back when we all had single cores we were all optimising XP to delete apps, stop services etc, now it just doesn't matter in the slightest.

The only reason that Vista saw such large initial drops was due to bad drivers, Vista driver model was completely rewritten so drivers were troublesome at first.

It's likely that performance of the operating system is never going to be a factor in performance for desktop machines unless you have diabolically old hardware.

Some interesting results there.

It's good to know I won't be having to drop back to xp any time soon, 7 has done itself proud on all fronts. The 4 core v 2 core section was interesting, might have to start looking for a cpu upgrade, beginning to notice some difficulties in newer games, dragon age being noe of them [runs at 90%+ all the time!]

The major improvement with Win 7 is that you can jump between a game and anotehr app/desktop without the graphics going bezerk.

Haha, I had my mouse over a graph when I was looking at it without realising. I turned and must have knocked my mouse, when I looked back I was like, wut?!?!

Hmmm have to say I'm pretty impressed so far with Windows 7's gaming performance, the only thing I am having issues with which can sometimes be the way when moving from one OS to another is compatability on games such as GT Legends with Starfoce Copy Protection etc ... other than that is is excellent on 64-Bit version with my new Sapphire 5850 :D

The only thing I've had problems with is Tages copy protection on Chronicles of Riddick. Other than that I really like 7.

Thanks for the link.

Win7 is great for gaming and great for desktop usage. It's a worthwhile upgrade for everyone - whether XP or Vista users - and I see no legitimate reason for not upgrading, unless you simply don't use your computer much. For gaming it offers better performance and DX10/11 support, which means that XP is finally left far behind as a distant memory. For desktop usage it expands upon Vista's functionality, meaning drive imaging (helpful in case of any problems), strong search capabilities, automatic driver detection through Windows Update, customisability (setting wallpapers to change at set intervals), etc.

At this point no-one should be planning to stick with XP and Vista users should be strongly considering an update, even though the gains are less noticeable (even so the OS feels a lot more snappy as a whole).

£80-175 and the hassle of reinstalling an OS to have the same is a legitimate reason to not change from a working OS.

Ain't broke? Change it anyway, mike wants more cash.

^^ with XP full screen games completely messed with resolutions, if they weren't running same as desktop. w7 doesn't seem to have this problem. think this is what he means

I like Vista better than 7.

Wait, hear me out.

If you have good hardware, there is 0 noticable performance difference; and the UI is better in Vista. It takes so many clicks to ****ing do anything in 7 :S

Simple things like MSN being on your start bar constantly, because 7 doesn't put any apps in the tray also are irritating.
