Car for friend 1-1.5k

My friends car has recently been wrote off (I'm glad it was a very old Vauxhall Corsa with a Volkswagen badge).

Anyway, he is after a new car budget £1000-£1500, he would be willing to spend a couple hundred more if its worth it but would rather stick to the lower limit.

He is after...

1.4 Pref - 1.6 Max
3 or 5 Door
Power Steering

Not a huge deal of requirements except he would like to get something a little bit less common than a fiesta, corsa, golf etc and also not have it be a huge jump in his insurance. He is 25 with 5 years no claims (although this may change due to the little scrot who hit him now changing the story :mad:).

Suggestions?

Then he's going to buy a crap car. Seriously, he has a grand, he can't be fussy over utter non issues like this. When he has enough money for a more expensive car he can be fussy and choosy over how 'common' what he buys is.

At this money any rare car will be rare because it's a steaming turd.
 
Looks like another typical 1500 quid car to me, ie, a bag of crap :p

Finding a good one is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

In all fairness my mate is very open, at the common car area corsa, fiesta etc what general spec should he be looking for for £1500. And yes of course any other suggestions, he liked the look of a Tigra he saw they other day, how are they?

Civic, good shout but it's going to be pretty old for the money. Very old infact. Colt? See my original point tbh

To be honest I'd be after something like a 406, Mondeo, etc etc at this money. Cheap small cars are crap because most people in the £1k market want a small car, so demand and supply cause high prices for tatty cars and make the really nice ones go for outside of the budget anyway.
 
Get down off that high horse of yours, a Colt is just as good as a Civic.

Remind me again how many repairs your awesome BMW has had in the last couple of years? My steaming pile of turd has had zero, you need to get real.

Whats good about it? It's a hopelessly generic early 90's Japanese hatchback which doesn't manage to redeem itself in the styling stakes as well as the Civic manages. A good buy for a 500 quid 'get me to the station without breaking' car but beyond that?

The only really interesting thing about the Colt is quite how they managed to keep making them as long as they did. Nothing looks more completely out of place than an '02' plate on a Colt.

The Civic has more 'cred', a better range of engines, etc.

It's not 'different' - its just generic.
 
Civics are normally expensive to insure in comparison to other cars, no?

They are, but mine never cost more than 200 more to insure and that was in the first year of ownership.

Then I only really changed wheel bearings, ARB droppers and had my clutch problems over a 4 and a half period.

And the clutch had a good innings (108k) - mechanic reckons it could have been the original - I had no paperwork for a previous change. But then again, torque destroys clutches, and so I never really had a problem there......

Personally I preferred spending a little more on insurance and not repairing it as often. Others prefer spending less insuring it and risk having to repair it more.
