I brought a bottle of Jim Beam Black and a bottle of Crown Royal back from the states recently.

The Jim Beam is gone but the Crown has such a nice bottle I almost don't want to drink it. :D

A couple of bottles of Benromach are always in my flat. Lovely stuff, my parents house is less than half a mile from the distillery! Although right now I would love a jim beam black and coke.

A cheap offer on Benromach was my first ever decent bottle. Might get one again for old times sake. ;)

lucky lucky man

tried a Laphroaig in Edinburgh a fortnight ago, for the life of me I cannot remember its full title but it was 62%. Was one of the nicest I have ever tried.

I've never really tried any "nice" whisky... I'm not sure I'd enjoy it or not but would like to give it a go.

Can anybody recommended a cheap brand available in the supermarket... Any good offers at the moment? I know I might not get very good without spending much but I'd like to see if I like the stuff before spending too much.

As I don't know what flavours I like, something middle of the road would probably be best...

Best cheap and widely available single malts around at the moment (IMO) are probably Arbelour 10yo (delicate & malty), Laphroaig 10yo (pungent, peaty, smoky medicinal), Laphroaig Quarter cask* (as the 10yo but stronger with a sweeter element), Glenmorangie 10yo (spicy, with woody flavours), Talisker 10yo (smoky and spicy), Dalwhinnie 15yo (well balenced, an all rounder).

I've seen all available in supermarkets for under £30 for 70cl bottles recently.

*Not tried this one but reputation is excellent. I've asked for a bottle for Christmas.
