So yeh, mininova has finally caved in and deleted all illegal material on thier site! Not that it really changes anything imo.

Today, public torrent website Mininova officially called it quits with illegally distributing copyright material on its site, and has introduced filters to block copyright content from being uploaded.

The website is largely known as the second biggest public torrent tracker in the world, second to The Pirate Bay, which recently disabled their tracker, but remains operational using DHT and PEX.

Mininova has been under a lot of pressure from court rulings to implement copyright filters or take the website offline. Last August, the courts ruled in favor against Mininova and up until now, the website has taken its time to implement filters into its uploading to prevent further prosecution.

Mininova will no longer support copyrighted material to its website, which would have used specific filters to block uploaded content, but says it was impossible to filter 100% of copyright material. Mininova later scraped that project and decided to go with their limited content distribution method, only allowing specific materials on their website and removing most of their material.

Now with two of the largest websites finally submitting to RIAA and MPAA lawsuits and court rulings, the world of torrent based websites is slowly coming to an end, but will only push illegal downloaders further underground and into other methods of downloading.

Yeah tis a real shame, had some good stuff on there as well. Evil governments. :(

Yeah, damn the government for trying to protect property rights, how dare they, I mean it's not like there are laws to do it, or that they protect your property rights or anything...

What illegal content did mininova used to host? None.

It's like shutting down a hardware store because they sell screwdrivers which someone might use to break into a car.

I love laughing at people that use torrents for piracy. I remember trying to explain the concept of newsgroups, usenet and SSL to a torrenter once. Never again. Not that I label them with the same paint, but use rapidshare at the very least!?!

Did they have actual material on the site or just the torrents?

What does it mean that the PB tracker is gone, You can still download a torrent from PB and let uTorrent download the file without doing extra things

Some people use these sites to download material they have no way of buying. TV shows in the states for example - I'm sure many people would gladly pay to watch them but the opportunity is not there.

This argument is tired and has been discredited in courtroom after courtroom as being simply untrue in legal terms.

A more appropriate analogy would be supplying names, addresses and price lists of drug dealers, an act which is actually illegal.

Yeah mininova had nothing illegal on its site. Only torrent files not the actual content that was illegal. Mininova was all legal and above board.

So possession of warez is the same as possession of illegal drugs now?

To be fair it is more like shutting down a hardware store because they sell keys to specific cars, and tell you where the car is and how big it is. Admittedly they also tell you how to copy the car so you won't inconvienience the original owner, but the car manufacturer will lose out of what could have possibly been a sale if you had more money.

People must be kidding themselves if they use torrent sites like mininova for anything other than illegal downloading, Downloading any content which is protected by copyright laws is illegal, regardless of your intension to buy later or use.
