Mininova deletes all illegal material

There's no reason, technically anyway, that Hulu.com couldn't be made available worldwide - and I suspect in time this will come.

Sites like Spotify, iPlayer etc have shown that there is a viable alternative and people will use it.

TBH the more people downloading the better, it is driving innovation and is finally making better use of the technology available to optimise media delivery

People must be kidding themselves if they use torrent sites like mininova for anything other than illegal downloading, Downloading any content which is protected by copyright laws is illegal, regardless of your intension to buy later or use.

wow patchs are often faster on torrent sites , most mmo clients are usually faster on torrent sites

I logged in last night and someone had cleared out the place lol, I thought it was to due to the maintenance they were doing.

What stops people uploading the torrents again ?

Yeah, damn the government for trying to protect property rights, how dare they, I mean it's not like there are laws to do it, or that they protect your property rights or anything...

What the people want is more important that what big business (mostly american) wants

Newsgroups are still around and I am sure other ways to download copyrighted material will pop up and replace these sites. They are never going to 100% stop people downloading illegal material purely because of the amount of people out there doing this.

Never used this torrent site, i tend to use BT Junkie which is pretty good for most stuff...

This argument is tired and has been discredited in courtroom after courtroom as being simply untrue in legal terms.

A more appropriate analogy would be supplying names, addresses and price lists of drug dealers, an act which is actually illegal.

You could probably google the content too - that places google in the same boat by precedence. Google only provided the links Ma'Lud. Then add to that the illegal uploads that exist on youtube.. all about shifting the blame.

I'm surprised Rapidshare aren't targetted more heavily by the authorities.

I assume they, and also newsgroups will be targeted in time, which might shut up some of the smug people in this thread ;)

Newsgroups i'm not sure about but Rapidshare haven't been targetted largely due to the fact they actively police and try and remove offending materials.

Find an RS link more than 2 or 3 weeks old and chances are it has a 'this file has been removed for breach of copyright' message on it.

No, the analogy was in legal terms.

The process of facilitating or making easier the purchase of drugs is illegal, even if you do not actually supply the drugs yourself.

Likewise the process of facilitating or making easier copyright infringement (as per various judgements relating to both TPB and mininova) is also illegal, even if you do not actually supply the copyrighted content yourself. The google defense doesn't apply (as per the TPB and mininova verdicts) due to the way these sites have presented themselves as sources of these sorts of material, and shown zero interest in policing the material (mininova) or actively refused to police the material (TPB).

Oh and Google have made real attempts to address the images that can be readily searched using their engine. Lets face it the only way you can get images deleted is if they are objectionable ones of the Presidents wife. If you search for a medical diagnosis on a series of symptoms then Google will throw adverts at you for drugs that should not be licensed for general release in this country - i.e presenting itself as gateway to illegal goods with no attempt to stop that. The Google defence relies purely on the fact its easy to attack TPB and Mininova not so easy to attack a company that would be very difficult to take on. And you can quite equally google for torrent trackers so they themselves are not policing this again taking away half of your Google theory.

However, I find I do not need to download stuff as I have a Lovefilm subscription and get to watch all the films I want and play all the games that I want. I use Spotify and find it generally to be good. It still does not have a great deal of the niche stuff that I can still only get on torrent or usenet as it is pretty much impossible to get it through any legal channels. If there are DRM free materials presented in a fashion as easy to use as say a certain Russian site was for music, TV and film then everyone is on to a winner. If people are still breaking copyright after that is available then throw the book at them for all I care.

I always laugh when I see and hear people downloading illegal content period.
I try to explain to them the law etc...
However once they put their fingers in their ears I just take a step back and realise thieving scum with no morals will simply never listen.

Does it look like rain up there? What do you see?

So if I point out a drug dealer in the pub to my mates, the police could do me for it?

Christ, we really are living in a police state aren't we?

:(
