roughly how much does recorded cost?

For me £5.80 but it depends on the weight of the item in question, mine was over a kilo so use that as a rough guess.

Depends vastly. I sent an external DVD drive back to a shop (large package, not all that heavy though), cost me £3.40, I sent a USB back to another, it cost me £1.30 or something.

It's worth it for the piece of mind, plus if RM lose it, you don't lose out as you can claim off them.

as long as the sender doesn't advertise he's the last one sending, and then the present arrives on the doorstep the next day

Not really. If it's a lurker/new person they could well have spotted this thread and thought it a nice idea so posted in it before posting elsewhere. Note they said next year, not 'shame I missed out'.
