The cumbria situation

The best solution to this is to build more houses in floor plains / flood prone areas. At least that's government thinking.

yep got to love it, and then pipe all waste water from miles and miles of tarmacked land, into a river. which then surprisingly floods lower down stream.

As to funding abroad I think it's a disgrace. That 6billion. Should be for our own infrastructure. Both nuclear, renewable and local production.

I live in Appleby and the muppets over the other side of the river did not want a flood defence as it spoils there view. WLF?? And most years they get flooded ; ) but we don't as we have a flood defence. :)

You get 12.5 inches of rain in one night, then there's going to be flooding wherever you live. Cumbria is the wettest county in England, it's not like they wouldn't be used to heavy rain unlike the South-East.

People can bury their heads in the sand all they want, but extreme weather events in this country are becoming more and more common. Whether that is caused by MMGW or not I don't know.

One could argue that it is the local and national governments job to maintain the rivers and prevent them breaking bank ... meaning that they are responsible for the flooding due to failure to have adequate flood defences in place.

Yes, but that remains to be proved. The flood defences might already have been adequate but overwhelmed by an unusually strong storm.
