Either the price is crazy or I am? I've just ordered the following described as a refurb:

ASUS Asus G2S7 Laptop
Processor Type: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5 GHz
Memory: 4 GB DDR II SDRAM 800 MHz
Hard Drive: 320 GB SATA
Display: 17" 1440 x 900 WXGA+
Video: GeForce 8700 GT 512 MB
Optical Drive: DVDRW (Integrated)

Operating System:
Operating System: MS Windows Vista Home Premium

Ports:
4 x USB
1PCIe x PCMCIA
56k
TV-Out Video Out

£480!!!!! Damn, what you reckon will be wrong with it? Comes with 12 months rtb warranty but there has to be a catch do you think?

Priced about right for a refurb. The 8700mGT is quite old now and could be affected by the problems that the 8 series had in laptops.

Mainly affected the 8400 and 8600, but I think some 8700's got it too. Think they overheated really easily and just crapper out. Dell released a bios update to make the fans spinup more often, but i dunno what other companies have done.

Most companies just skipped over the issue by making the fan stay on all the time, very annoying with a laptop, also HP and compaq offered to extend the warranty on some models by an extra 12 months, Dell swapped out some with ATI cards.

Received this today and my first impressions are very positive. Seems to be in mint condition, has the smallest of scratches on the lid but nothing really noticeable. I'm most impressed with the build quality. Only thing I'm disappointed about so far is that it has a 32 bit version of Vista, annoys me not being able to use all 4 gigs of RAM! Having said that, it seems zippy enough.

Not had a chance to put it through its paces yet, I'll have to wait until daughter is in bed as it is a Christmas present for her! She has her heart set on a laptop on which she can play games like The Sims and Spore etc. However, hope it lasts her a few years because I won't be spending this type of money on a Christmas prezzie for a long while!

Glad your pleased, it certainly has plenty of processing power for a laptop, just make sure it's always used on a flat surface if the fan vents are on the bottom as heat is the killer on the Nvidia 8 series. Beds and carpets are a no no.

Intention is that it remains on a desk in her room. Do you think it would benefit from a laptop cooler? I really need her to look after this!

Well I can't say I wasn't warned, hit our first real problem today and my daughter is quite upset about it!

Basically, installed Sims 3 today and she can't play for more than 10 mins without it artifacting or just locking up. I have the very latest Nvidia drivers for the card installed and GPU-Z event log shows a max temp of 88C. The laptop seems to idle at around 60 but the speed at which this gpu heats up is frightening!

Gonna find a laptop cooler to see if that helps but if not the thing will have to go back, which is a shame because it is a lovely machine. :(

Some lappy manufacturers are offering free or cheap upgrades to W7 for customers who bought a Vista machine before end Dec. So its worth checking that out (I know Sony do for example).

You got a good price there, where was it? I got a referb for 433 quid, 2.1GHz C2D, 4gig ddr3m 4570 ATi with 512mb ddr2 ram, 320gig hdd, I thought I got a good deal!

Shame that it happened there bud. Dunno what to advise. A laptop cooler could help, but it would only temporally fix the issue since of course laptops are meant to be portable! :(

I actually think that the gpu itself is faulty, getting constant blue screens now! Reading around the web, the temps it is hitting shouldn't cause these problems. Yet to have any issues with the graphics driver uninstalled but the onboard is not capable of playing games. :(

Dithering whether to try a fresh OS install? Or just send it back to the jungle and see if they can fix it?

The problem with these graphics chips is that they were pretty much faulty from day one, its just a matter of time as to when they fail. Replacing the board will fix temporarily but inevitibly it will fail again.

Maybe worth while trying to swap it for a non affected model.

Hmmm, the plot thickens! I uninstalled the latest Nvidia drivers earlier this evening and ran driver sweeper. I then installed the driver from the supplied Asus G2Sg disc and it has performed without a hitch all evening, even with gpu max load temps of 90c! However, the driver date is from 2007. I'm beginning to wonder if I am to update the driver that it has to be from Asus to work correctly?

You have an older machine.
There is no sense in using the latest drivers.

I am no expert in this but, i have read a lot of threads on the net about drivers increasing temps.
I would suggest using the older drivers.

All the new drivers do is try to make the newer games run better, which you don't need.

No there ain't.

Unless you change hardware.

Drivers can fix problems some cars have with games, Dirt 2 never worked for me unless I updated to the 9.12 drivers, and I have a 4870, it's not new and I've not chasnged hardware. Other people have had that problem and plenty of cases where something like that has happened.

It's stupid to never update drivers, if I kept the first drivers that where for the 4870 it's be slower than a 4870 should be.
