I am 25 and decided I want to take my motorbike test, so step one is to take my CBT.

I havnt got any motorcycle clothing, and want some suggestions. I dont want to spend more than £150 for Helmet / Jacket and Gloves. I dont mind if the jacket / gloves are second hand.

Can you bikers give me some suggestions? are there any good online shops?

Thanks in advance

Can the CBT place not provide some clothing? I know quite a few of them do now, most crucial is helmet, get down to infinity or hein Gericke and see what fits best for your budget, apart from that check ebay for any cheap second hand jacket and gloves.

I tried borrowing gloves but found other people's sweat pretty minging, so gloves are one thing that I would buy new (apart from helmet, which I'd only buy second hand if I knew the person selling it well enough to be convinced it was treated well). You can get good helemets for about £60-£70.

I'd reccomend a nice suit , M&S have some nice ones for around £99 , Remember you want to look good while doing your CBT. Looks > everything else.

Just noticed there is a hein Gericke right next to my work so will pop down during the week!

The CBT place can provide gloves / helment etc, but I will need my own anyway as i hoped to be passed my test by new year.

What type of jacket do people suggest for winter riding? Leather or the synthetic type?

Cool, but what if you dont like it then you have just bought a load of kit? :p

dont like what ? riding?

I had a yamaha rt 100 from the age of 12 to 15 then got a 500 cc honda enduro, so there is no doubt i will like it :-P

i live in town and fed up of public transport and traffic, I also want a hobbie for the weekends other than getting smashed.

How about the FZ6 or the Suzuki Gladius, nobody really makes a 400cc anymore sadly, so has to be really a 600cc 4 or 650cc twin, or 675cc triple but I dont think you will get one for 3.5k though if you could you should get a Street Triple Immediately :p

But you should be able to get a decent FZ6 or Gladius for 3.5k, theyre under £5k new! Though the gladius is a twin and the FZ6 is a inline4, so depends what you like?
Maybe have a look at the Honda Hornet too.

oo, i like both the FZ6 and the Gladius, thanks for the suggestions. Hornets not bad either.

I'll be honest, I am a complete noob when it comes to road bikes. I am even out of touch with old 2 strokes never mind inline4, twin etc!

This is going to be my first bike. I want it so I can commute to work (5 miles), but also be able to go out at the weekend for some fun.

I ruled out a sports bike as I did think it would be sensible. They arn't as 'comfy' for commuting either are they?

What would you choose in my position?

What would insruance be like for a 25 year on the FZ6?

£30? :p ummm should not be too high, first year will always be the worst with no NCB, do a quick quote on thebikeinsurer.

Umm not sure really ive not had the chance to ride any of them yet, been told the hornet is abit boring but then a lot of people say that about hondas, but you either love them or hate them personal preference :p I have ridden the SV650 which is the old version of the gladius and loved that.
They say the FZ series are just detuned engines of the sportsbikes so they should be a good engine.
Try and get a testride on all of them :)

Any of them will do the commute fine and be fun for a weekend blast :p and dont really rule them out, I used my gsxr 750 for all year around riding and had no real problems with comfort, all really depends on the bike and your size etc.

FZ6, Gladius, ER6-N, Z750, new Hornet, they all look similarish to each other and all are nice imo.

I loved my Z750 when I had it, it cost me £3500 about 3 years ago so they should be gettable for less now. Nice looking bike.

Its probably not the advice you want but for clothing you get what you pay for and you only find out its true value when sliding down the road. but for cheap decent quality i would look at Frank Thomas stuff and Nitro helmets.

thanks for that, I know its not a good idea to skimp on the clothing that protects you. I'll probably end up spending a few hundred quid when I get to the shop- was just seeing if anyone knew of any special offers or good tips getting good value - this year has broken my bank account :)
