SCIENTISTS have grown meat in the laboratory for the first time. Experts in Holland used cells from a live pig to replicate growth in a petri dish.

The advent of so-called “in-vitro” or cultured meat could reduce the billions of tons of greenhouse gases emitted each year by farm animals — if people are willing to eat it.

The cells were then incubated in a solution containing nutrients to encourage them to multiply indefinitely. This nutritious “broth” is derived from the blood products of animal foetuses, although the intention is to come up with a synthetic solution.

Mmm, incubated in a broth of animal foetuses, sounds delicious... :D

So, if it were to become viable to grow this on a massive scale, would you eat it? I would.

Don't think i would. :(

if it tastes as good as the "real" thing, i couldnt care how it was cultivated, im willing to eat meat off an animal thats been killed and carved up, im sure i could manage synthetically grown, but again, aslong as it tastes as good

hmmm, all depends, I like my meat with a little fat, adds flavour, so if it's literally just a lump of meat, I'm not sure, and how would it affect the grain of the meat, you tear chicken breast apart and there's a definite grain, would it just be a world of burgers and pattys now?

I'd imagine it would end up having a texture of something like Quorn, unfortunately.

Jewish people and Muslims should be able to enjoy bacon sandwiches if it ever comes about, so they can see what they were missing out on :D

It depends if its safe to eat, I'd wait a year or so and see if people start dropping dead first :p. Sounds like the sort of thing that could cause cancer.

It would put lots of farmers out of business and would make some giant food company a lot of money, which is another reason i wouldn't be keen on it.

On the other hand it would mean that you could convert a good bit of the countryside back to wildlife as opposed to farms, which is good.

This ^^

It better have a bacon texture as well as taste!

I agree.

Texture is from muscle groups.

Massive duplication of cells will produce a blob with no grain whatsoever. How could there be with no purpose behind their growth.

I disagree.

The owners of the land would never do such a thing unless they were being given grants to do so - and there are in fact grants which are like that. Just that growing and rearing is generally a lot more profitable.

I'd suspect they would instead try to find crops which could be grown there instead.

that's the interesting thing, I've just spoken to one of my muslim friends, and he wouldn't eat it, simply said "why would I?" pigs are considered "dirty animals" and as it would still have the genetics of pigs he would consider it "unsafe" in terms of religious ethics, which I think is fair enough from his point of view.

Erm not to poo on your mates ideas, but don't we share tonnes of common genetic makeup with pigs. So are we "dirty animals" too:confused:

he means in the sense that they're close to the ground and poop everywhere, granted, I know pigs are actually clean animals, they have a designated pooping area and are in theory cleaner than cows, but it's not my religion or view, so it's not for me to debate, and I'm certainly not going to be one of those people trying to force beliefs on someone because their religion is "wrong" as some people would lol :p
