Switzerland appears to have backed minaret ban

then lets knock down Buckingham Palace ( a sign of slavery not only to blacks but also to whites)and replace it with homes.
What are you rambling on about? Nobody is proposing knocking down anything in Switzerland, they want to construct a new mosque not destroy what's already there.

because Switzerland, traditionally, has a specific style, and all modern construction must adhere to this tradition. thanks to the Ban, Mosques are no exception.

This is simply not true. This was voted in by the Neo Nazi UDC voters

For those that pretend not to understand one country's drive to maintain its own cultural and architectural character regardless of religious diversity - try to obtain planning permission for building replica of gothic cathedral in any of the middle eastern muslim countries. ;)

I quite like gothic cathedrals, would be nice to see one sat on the banks of the Bosphorus.

So because random foreigner number 6 acts one way we should all lower ourselves to that level?

The truth is, that if a majority of Swiss people don't want them to be built, is it not up to them to decide? I could understand outrage if the Swiss government took it upon themselves to make this call, but in reality it was the Swiss people. Surely in their own country they are entitled to vote to ban / accept / promote whatever they see fit?

Isn't it more to do with the fact that they call out prayer from the minarets at ridiculous times in the morning ?

It's not permitted to call to prayer from UK mosques in the traditional way or with loudspeakers but I'm sure they will eventually succeed in getting the law changed.
Most UK mosques inc. the new one at Redditch have a minaret with no access

Apart from all the usual reasons in favour of banning them, Im inclined to praise that decision for another one. I cant stand seeing how everything that goes against immigrants is necessarily ignorant, racist and branded as wrong while everything to please them is ultimately the right thing to do. The world isnt that black and white, and for all its worth, Swiss people have chosen on their own country affair.

+1

It’s basically planning law.

A building must, be in keeping with its surroundings & respect the architectural heritage of that area.
This applies to all buildings with one exception Mosques (well any religious structure, but no one is else is building them but that’s another story)

They wouldn’t be allowed to be built here, if we weren’t living in a country gone P.C mad & councils terrified of stepping on anyone’s toes.
If any council in this country blocked planning permission for a mosque there would be an uproar, you would see marches in the street & burning effigies of the councillors who blocked it.

The buildings don’t fit there for there shouldn’t be built!

With no exceptions, good job to Switzerland for standings up to them.

Aside from the noise they may create I don't see anything wrong with them...

I only a NIMBY opinion of them, same as those awful church towers, due to the noise they make...

But they are nice structures and I can't see how they can ''pollute the skyline'' like some people say here.

I disagree, get rid of all that old junk and build modern buildings imo. Hate old cities personally (how they look). Heritage my ***, build modern skyscrapers instead far nicer to look at. And while they're at it, build em in a way that there's enough space between them for wide roads and enough parking...

No it isn't. Should we ban gay marriage if that's what the majority of this country decides?

There are some things which you simply do not take to popular vote.

You should see the new Sikh 'palace' built in Leamington Spa.Has a HUGE white onion on top, tipped with gold.Looks totally alien to the town, and can be seen from miles away.
Planning permission...

No, the government is their to protect groups rights. So it should not always do what the public wants.

Sorry my view is completely different. A country should be run in the way the majority of people want it to be run. Anything other than this is simply not a democracy.

So you realize how that would affect school children?

I'm pretty sure you could round up enough people to get the teaching of evolution banned, or religious studies banned.

So goodbye to your religious freedoms then. You realise how screwed atheists would be under your idea of democracy?

I do, but I see it as the only way to run a society. Whenever you curb the right of people, citizens, to direct the way a country is run, a society tends to fail. I don't think for one second atheists would be in "trouble" in the UK, they probably make up the vast majority of the population

So, since a vast majority of British people dispise the BNP then clearly by your logic the party should be forecfully disbanded and made illegal, all BNP voters can then be rounded and arrested for racial hatred.
