Amature track car project - Advice needed

It is kinda Ironic that cheap metal and plastics, the reasons the low end PSA models are noisy (rattles, bumps, bit falling off) on road, is one of the reasons they make great lightweight track cars :D

Not my car, but don't underestimate the 205 GTi, and that has an 8v not a 16v, with an MI16 engine they are mental!

:D

Was a very quick car (ours was the mk1 that was in it from about 6:26-6:50). In my defence it looks like it was still early in the day (probably only my first or second ever run on that circuit) and I will have been on crap tyres at theat point :p

We both share the track car and were both driving on the Saturday, but it broke Saturday evening so was sat on the trailer in the paddock on Sunday :(

Granted a lot of them are. Palmer sport aint. You get to drive a big XKR jag thats been race preped.. So heavier RWD. A Caterham 7 super light. So light rwd. A clio cup racer. So light fwd and even a 911 stripped out so rwd rear engined. Then you have the JP1 and formula jag cars. You get about 6-8 laps in each at full chat with the instructors pushing you every step of the way. Expensive but he will defo come away with a much better idea of what he enjoyed and wants. :D
Sounds awesome actually, although for almost £800 I think I will have to research a cheaper but decent experience day as it sounds like a very good thing to do (and fun too!). Anyone been on a good but cheaper one?

Pretty much every car on your shortlist is on this video from Anglesey

Oh man I see what you were saying about it being more about the driver than the machine! That 205 must have a performance upgrade other than just being stripped right? And I noticed the lift off oversteer you mentioned as well, does look quite enjoyable.

Wow, I knew it was nice, but Anglesey looks superb. Will try to make a weekend of it next year.
Yeah it does look quite nice, a lot of run off room and pretty fast corners so would be good for a beginner.

Yeah I get what you mean, the sturdiness, sound proofing, and well the general solidity of the cars which are generally perceived to be "better" adds a great amount of weight killing the cars performance. Maybe I should re-think the BMW idea...

This is turning into a great thread - one of the reasons I like this forum so much. Really hope you get something sorted and that you can get on the track. I really do fancy another track-focused car. I want another crack at the 'ring - that was mad in a 1987 MR2!!!
Cheers man, I can't wait to make my purchase! And the Nürburgring is the dream! I've had the track memorised for years from playing computer games and I can't wait to actually drive it in real life! Although I'm going to get as much track experience on "easier" circuits before I "meet my hero".

I think the 205 is cammed and carbed, so maybe 140 bhp 1600 turbo will make @190bhp

MI16 will be better, slightly heavier but 163 bhp, and then cams and carbs... N/A is better on a track than a turbo of slightly higher peak bhp.

Only experience day I ever did was a rally day in a Mk2 Escort was one of my most fun days ever, a 25 yr old car on gravel, sideways.... Heaven.

Chap I know has 180bhp from a NA 1.9, though this is not cheap.

Engine stripped, balanced, blueprinted and rebuilt to 1.9 GTI-S spec.
Group B Cylinder Head.
Group A Engine Mounts (bit too much TBH, to be changed to std top one)
Mega Cam.
Twin 45 Carb Conversion.
Oil Cooler.

I'd go for something a bit different, N/A MK4 Supra, manual gearbox in tatty condition for 2k. Strip absolutely everything out of it and sell it to make a few quid back, use that and the remaining cash for brake and suspension upgrades and a decent oil coolder. 220 bhp, RWD and an absolutely bullet proof engine. Although a little heavy, with a decent suspension setup it will be more than quick enough!

JZ engine is a good reason to get the Supra, massively over developed so can take track abuse with ease, and you can get another for peanuts if it does go pop as people are always swap them for the turbo version.

That is true, but you can strip a huge amount of weight out if you are brutal enough, things like the seats are massively heavy and can be replaced with cheap buckets. Carpet, sound deadening, back seat, door trim, speakers, aircon, heater matrix can all go and you are looking at 150 kg lighter!

Then it's a 1.35 Tonne barge?

Oh man, my dream car is getting cussed :( I always knew it wasn't the best car for tracks but be kind fellas ;)

So are we saying a stripped n/a Supra would weigh more than a stripped E36 M3?

Another theoretical question for the future once our mechanical experience has vastly improved... What would be a good, light RWD base to swap a Supra or M3 engine into? Or would this just be futile?
