Dragon Age: Origins - SPOILER Discussion area.

Just completed it for my first run-through.

Insane game.. sucked up all my time outside of work for the last age. I've played a bit of MW2 and havnt touched L4D2 although pre-ordered.

Loved it all the way through and its making me want to replay it straight away. The ending synopsis was great and picked up on all the events id forgotten about. Now I want to replay and make the opposite decisions. I tried to be consistent with my Noble Human Rogue approach to things, basically, greedy nympho badass mother with a conscience. So revenge was key at all times, but also was cash and triple timing leliana, morrigan and zev.

Next playthrough is planned. Silver-tongued mage who talks everyone round to her side with her awesome norks. Its one of the things I missed with the rogue because I didnt coerce that many. I also didnt find Shale.. where is he? Where is that DLC? I think I'd like to use him and leave Alistair out of the next run-through.

Assuming you have the DLC ticked in the menu then the quest starts at the left side of the lake, roughly in line with the mages tower (but slightly lower). Then sends you down south to the tower.

Shale is awesome, and kinda funny. However I hardly use him as I can't change the way he looks enough for my linking and I like the Legion of the Dead and Juggernaut armour too much so have to build my team around them :D

Can anyone please give me tips on how to defeat Gaxkang (The "Unbound" quest in Denerim), how on earth do you defeat him, I can only get about 5% of his health down before I'm wiped out, and he also seems to heal himself. I've got Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan with me.

Many thanks again, this just seems impossible.

keep them stunned, knocked down or best spell of all crushing prison.

Not really jumped in to this thread so far but ive done the game once on hard using shale / morrigan (heal & cc) / leliana and having my own dps bloodmage

doing it again on nightmare/hard mixed up a bit as parts of nightmare are still easy (plain hard was easy when done right it seems) but yeah things like the high dragon are a pain on nightmare even with force field.

On that note, a tip for anyone who's finding their tank dies too fast on some fights, let the tank get aggro and chuck heals on then when close to death put on the force field. Things will still attack them usually till they die and your tank cant take damage. Crushing prison is also broken with force field with explosive fun ;)

I don't think any of those really work on the Unbound quest boss... i remember fighting it at lvl18ish and it was causing some major hurt and either resisting or shrugging off any stun/lockdown effects very quickly.

Best you can really do is use Flame/Frost/Telekinetic Weapons for as much damage as you can and bring mass shutdown spells. Cone of Cold and Petrify are strong favourites.

Having serious problems with Gaxkang myself :(

Can get him to about half health on hard, at which point he just healed himself right back up.

I think all bosses are resistant to Shatter.

Make sure you always get a Resistance Hex on the boss, makes a big difference (assuming its not resisted)

I'm on my second playthrough, and like gord I'm heading a similar route, for a silver-tongued Mage who's a bit of a git. My original party makeup was Alastair, Wynne and Morrigan.
I'm tempted to stick with Wynne and Morrigan just to see how devistating a 3-mage combo can be....but at the same time, I'd like to experiment with some of the other classes.

Will probably be Shale, Wynne (no idea how anyone does this without a healer) and a character like Zev (but not Zev, I've already planned some of my decisions and lets just say he doesn't factor into my storyline ;))

I think I'll cheat and respec Leilana to drop the Archery skills and move toward 2H Assasin instead.

Bit disappointed with Arch Demon fight, both my mages were killed by run of the mill dark spawn, not the arch demon =/

Killed him with Me (Arcane Warrior/Nothing) + Alistair (Champ/Temp) with a few pots, don't think I even used CoC, maybe a crushing prison (that every single orange mob resisted till arch demon =/) but mana runs out in 10-15 seconds due to shield.

Excellent game, starting again with Human Noble Archer.

For those that have completed or are near the end of the game, how do you kill the Genlock Shapechanger? Every bit of damage I do to him restores his health rather than taking it away.

Er... that doesn't make sense... its not possible to absorb attacks like Diablo or Final Fantasy.

I had no problems with it that i recall.

Well its doing it :p. Rather than the usual white damage indicator, everything is coming up in blue and the actual model for the monster looks warped. I'm guessing its bugged so i'm gonna keep reloading.

Yeah blue is just cold damage... usually means a staff or Frost Weapons. Its probably just bugged then, sounds like a pretty weird bug though, you sure its not just being Healed?

Blue means cold damage doesn't it?

No runes with frost damage, no mage casting frost spells.

Its definitely being healed. It'll usually enter the fight about half way after Wynne casts Fireball (the only time it gets hurt) and from then on, any damage done (inc Fire) heals it.

Edit: And now it works after the 10th reload :p. Character model has reappeared and the monster takes damage. Now to complete it.

Completed it today, went for the goody toeshoes approach as a warrior. That was dull so now i'm going to play it as *I* would, by that i mean i'll really think about decisions and make the one i feel i'd make if in that situation. It's so easy to tell which is the good option and which is the bad i found myself automatically opting for good.
