Are achievements spoiling games?

Achievements on the PC are meaningless because there is no central system which keeps track of it all like Live or PSN. I don't even bother to look at them really.

Games for Windows Live?

I want to see more games use it
I understand about the host of Steam game achievements which mean relatively nothing though

Personally I try to get all the achievements which I'm able to get, the pointless grinding ones or the silly online ones I don't worry about

Achievements haven't added anything worthwhile to any game I've ever played so I just completely ignore them now. To me they seem like a pointless console gimmick that has sadly crept onto the PC.

I don't see why your complaining about those FO3 achievements... its to encourage you to ROLE PLAY as a different type of character. You wouldn't start bitching about how Dragon Age has achievements for reaching lvl20 as a Warrior, Rogue and Mage would you? The 'gain all xxx line spells/talents' achievements are pushing it though. You can't honestly only play these games on 1 character and nothing else.

Bethesda games are different though as you can become a super human all-in-one class. As the games are skill based instead of class based, you can end up maximising pretty much all skills. So no real need to replay again to try a different specialised career, apart from reaching the decent skill levels more early than if you spread the points.

And as the game world is open, you can always revisit missed content without starting again.

I don't even care about achievments and never bother to check them. They mean little to me and I think the fact that developers and gamers focus so much on them takes away from the focus of gameplay.

I hate the Live thing, it's terrible. I'd rather use Steam!

I hate it on principle. Steam is 1 thing, most games that require it are either created by Valve and have a legit reason for being needing Steam and some are just small companies using it for help with distribution. But GFWL gets stuck onto games for no reason. Its never integrated properly... you don't run it through GFWL like you do Steam, its a ****ty little add-on.

Yes but you can't blow up Megaton, then decide to go back and save it, in the same game can you. You can't decide to enter Paradise Falls and slaughter every last Slaver scumbag in the area, then go back later to turn in Red and Arkansas.
I think you amy of missed the point of the role playing side... thanks to level 30 it is entirely possible to max practically everything in 1 character, but that doesn't mean you can't reach it using a different playstyle or make different decisions along the way. I personally put some effort into focusing on Melee and Big Guns and walking around in T-51b Power Armour (pre DLC) on 1 playthrough which is a very different style to sneaking around with a Lincolns Repeater blowing everythings head off in a single shot. You could do both of those styles by level 30... but you miss the process of starting out weak and slowly getting better. Its just not the same.

They certainly do not spoil games for me, at least in some sense. I tend to try and and only play games with achievements these days on both windows and my consoles, I usually enjoy doing them when they are actually hard to do, not the moronic ones a lot of games seem to come with like "walk forwards" or "complete tutorial" or "win your first race".

I totally 100% hate though, the ones which require you to go online to do them on 360, I only have a silver account and I have no intention of upgrading it ever. So I have a handful of games right now which have all achievements completed except the multiplayer ones...grr :o

I've always ignored them, they are of no interest to me at all.

Same here.

Dunno why people some are so obsessed with them. Was playing dark carnival in L4D2 the other day and one guy was trying to get the strongman achievement. So just to be annoying I stood on the indicator thing to stop him getting it and he got really angry at me on voice chat :/

I don't like achievements but I don't think they are spoiling games, most of the time you can just ignore them.

It's annoying when you have to login to GFWL and other such nonsense though.

Achievements are good, encourage completetion and add lots of replay value

totally agree...its one of the things that made battlefield 2 so good...getting more points for higher rank and achievements...but the achievements in l4d2 are so easy its a complete joke...most valve games achievements can be gained by a 12 year old

Well yes, sometimes its just adding them for the sake of adding them (since Xbox players will want them or would probably boycot the game because they can't get gamerscore or something retarded like that...). There isn't much point in them but at least they don't detract from gameplay.

The thing is, i still wish Valve would add achievements for HL2 and Episode 1. Episode 2 had some extra replay value beyond just wanting to play it again for teh sake of it. Adding the achievements to them would definatly give me a reason to play through them again.

*thinks of World of Goo and the aptly named OCD awards*

I've only ever taken a interest in achievments if they have rewarded me with something. Like guns, armour, upgrades, perks, blahblah, you name it. If the achievement offers no reason for me to take it, then undertake it I shall not!

I hope future Rank/Achievement systems offer more rewards to make them worthwhile taking. I don't want to feel I've killed xxx amount of Zombies on L4D2 for a few measly pixels of on-screen text, because that's totally worthwhile! World of Warcraft has a fantastic achievement system, with titles, mounts, gear rewards etc. Achievements = requirements for other achivements, lots of stuff to do and helps get people doing things you would never expect to be doing. Old dungeons etc.

I hate steam and windows live. Both their achievment systems are cr*p and should be removed so I'm not distracted by the pointless achievements popping up in the top right hand of my screen every time I do something absolutely easy and pointless. Woah, shoot 4 zombies in the face with a .44 Magnum. DIFFICULTY!, yeah having the achievement is awesome, but I have no incentive to do so. If it say, gave me a permament laser sight on all my weapons in multiplayer or something then yea, sure, I'll do it, because I got a reward.

Windows live is good for connecting PC/Xbox 360 users and building some sort of community. I feel steam is the best games release platform yet and I use it only to chat with (via steam friends) and buy and launch my games, adding all my shortcuts makes it painless to hunt for a launcher icon for a game.
