Bonjourno,
Been out the game for 4 months now what with work. However, bored and got some spare cash... around £230 notes... just a bit bored and want to upgrade. Happy with CPU from last year and memory and HD's... however, wondering if I can now upgrade and get a proper boost in performance by upgrading the GPU's which must be getting long in the tooth now. Not arsed about Crysis, so lets not go there... playing FPS'ers... and recently just bought COD MW2... what if anything will give me a major boost for around this much cash?

Cheers
Pug :)

Nothing thats instock at the moment :(

You could get 2x 260GTX - but thats a lot of money to spend on tech thats on its way out.

Really you wanna be holding out for atleast a midrange DX11 card.

A single 5770 is give or take around the same speed as what you have now and maybe even slower if those GTs are clocked well and afaik your board can't do crossfire.

if your 2 8800GT's can handle MW2 decently at the moment , ide hold out a little while.

what resolution do you play at? if its 1650x1050 or below perhaps an XFX 5850 when they come in its only a tenner more..

So, looking around £300+ notes then to get a big increase?

Running games at 1900x1200... MW2 runs fine tbh... nice and fast, but there's always this thing in the back of my mind thinking "I need more speed"

5850/5870 would be a reasonable boost - but good luck finding stock - and the 5970 is way expensive atm.

A single 200 series card isn't going to be much faster than what you have now - and as you already have an SLI capable motherboard the 295GTX would be a silly waste of money... so imo it boils down to either 260/275GTX SLI or waiting for stock of DX11 cards.

If they are 512MB cards your soon gonna start bumping into the VRAM limits - unless you play with 2x AA and turn settings down - I upgraded from 8800GT SLI to 260GTX SLI due to hitting VRAM limits on my 2048x display when I turned the AA up.

Yeah, both 512MB cards... I usually play with 4xAA and 8xAF as default... monitor won't go above 1900x1200 so, I've got no worries with that.

Seems to me, unless I spend quite a bit more than I want to, I'm not really going to get much performance.

Amazing isn't it just hot long these 8800GT's have lasted... the 8 series surely has to go down as the greatest nvidia cards since the 4 series? The 5 was a waste... the 6 was dubious, 7 was good, but didn't seem to be around long... then onto the 8's which seem to have been here for years?

I wouldn't have bothered upgrading from the 8800GT SLI if it wasn't for running into VRAM bottlenecks at higher resolutions/settings... should easily see you through until nVidia DX11 cards.

Also running 2x 8800 512 in Sli, and asked similar question a while back so interresting to see the advice is still pretty much the same. I agree the 8 series and in particular the 8800 has been an epic card. I'm able to run MW2 with everything turned fully up no probs. would love to buy new card but no need right now so am holding off and adding more to the money pot. by time I need it new Nvidia cards should be out so will see if any good, if not then i'll head to the red corner.
