Thinking of apple 3Gs... stop me!!

The guy in work I bought the Hero from has now had his HD2 for about 2 weeks. He's now hoping that when the htc dragon (hd2 hardware with andriod) comes out he'll be able to flash his hd2 to use it. Apparently WinMo 6.5 with the htc ui is much better than his last winmo phone but still not as nice as the hero.

I still think the iPhone is a very good phone and would take one over a winmo phone any day. I think though that they just haven't moved with the times, when the first iphone came out it's competition was the awful buggy winmo and symbian that simply never delivered what it promised. I guess andriod is showing how things will go moving forward which should mean that it gets MS and Apple to actually do some dev work and improve they're offerings.

Well i've had my iphone 3GS 16Gb for a few days now and so far im very happy with it. Hasn't crashed or let me down. I've customised it to the way I like it and have got several apps from the app store easily. Apps like Google Mobile, Wikipedia,
Your Orange", Yell.com, Dictionary, Tv Guide etc help day to day use.

Surfing the net is fast and web pages look good on the screen. The Safari browser is a pleasure to use.
Got several Cydia apps installed to make it even better. I use it mainly for texts and getting my emails. Got all my emails coming to it. At home its always connected to my router so its lightening fast. On the move i have Orange internet which is not as fast but good enough.

As for it being chavy, I only know 2 other people with an iphone so for me it isnt bad.

There are things i dont like about it though:-

BlueTooth - Sucks that Apple didnt keep it standard and that i cnat share things with people with phones of other makes. Theve restricted it to headsets and iphones!

The Housing - Yes it looks attractive and modern but without a cover it would look very scratched and dull before long. The screen needs cleaning a lot to remove finger prints etc!

The Battery - Shocking bad how it drains so fast! To combat this problem i've got a car charger, a charger at home and a charger at work! When im using it a lot to text and email the battery does drain quickly. In the space of 6hrs i went from going from a full charge down to 21%. It really needs to be on charge at every opportunity.

I've come from always owning Nokia phones and i can trully say that as a phone, the iphone certainly lacks behind Nokia's interms of producing "phones" in the true sense of the word!

Average Joe on the street is very limited with the functionality of the iphone! This is not a problem for people who know about hacks, jailbreaks etc who can get around it and make the iphone into something a lot lot better!

I can't decide between HD2 or 3GS ;/
I generally hate mac stuff but there's no ignoring the 3GS is a marvellous bit of equipment.

Well my pros for the HD2:

+ Better camera w/ flash
+ Bigger screen
+ Faster internal hardware
+ Expandable memory
+ Cheaper

Loads of other good points but they wouldn't have made my decision. The only plus I could see with the 3GS is bigger app store, but then 90% of that is all novelty rubbish anyway.

I agree that the iphone seems to be everywhere at the minute. Sometimes it's good to be different :D

i have a simple rull i "try" and stick to when buying something. if it's advertised on t.v, don't buy it! plenty of products have great success and don't need fancy adverts to make people buy them. the htc hero owes it's success from being a great phone, the iphone owes it to a cool advert.

I think it's very easy to jump on the, "it's mega popular by every day noobs so it must be sheit" band wagon. I think the iPhone is prolly one of the few exceptions to the rule, imho.

My apologies then :D
This seems to be the general opinion everywhere though. It's like people are trying too hard to be non-conformist when occasionally, if it's popular then it might actually be pretty good.

That is a fiar point, but not what i was asking.

As a PC / Mac tech person, as in i had to fix both when hardware/software broke, in my years of doing it, macs when broke are a nightmare to fix and looking inside they were not built with anywhere near the cost of the unit parts. Also, it was hard to get replacements for them as almost no one repairs them so took ages for Apple to send anything we needed. Software was so-so, some worked, others needed days or weeks of tweaking to get going.

Pc side, worked fine, easy to fix, spare pars all over the place and a lot of times, 1/2 the price!

So, when i come to the iphone [mac] Im a little jaded from my computer experience.

I know a lot of people use it, why im asking is it any good or have people fallen into the trap of, it looks nice so it must be good, or, for £200 and £60 a month [france prices!] is there better out there i should be looking at :)

Good thread so far so thanks again for that!

The iPhone 3GS can be bought with 32GB of memory. Can you buy memory cards up that size that aren't prohibitively expensive?

Genuinely curious, as not made up my mind on what phone to buy in the spring...

No, well maybe, but the max memory size the HTC HD2 can take anyway is 8GB (from the few sources I can find that state that). I just prefer that as I can then use it as flash memory, which apparently you can't with the iPhone as everything has to be done through iTunes (not 100% sure on this though?).

That way I can stick HD films/work files/etc onto a card using a card reader and then use my phone at a mates house to transfer them over, as well as have more than one card. An 8GB card is like £10 jfyi.

Ah, right. I'd want to have my entire music collection on my phone, which is about 25GB, as I can't be doing with changing it all the time and moving stuff back and forth manually. I just want to sync and forget.

Looks like the iPhone is still the best bet on that front...

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... Come on make my mind up for me too!!!...

3GS... HD2... N900... 3GS... HD2... N900 etc........... :(

your logic is flawed. All the people I know that have iPhones are because their friends have them and tried it and loved it - were amazed at the seamlessmess; the responsiveness; plethora of software etc. Not because of a "stupid" advert. :)

to those not knowing what to get. If you want a phone with an excellent choice of software. Either the android phones or iPhone. IMO not the n900. The n900 is also immature as a phone.

The hd2 is very nice. Not sure about that one ....

Well they're £70 for 32GB microSD's, so quite high, but then the iPhone costs more at purchase, so you could have the same memory capacity for a similar cost, on a slightly better contract deal.

The HD2 will work fine with a 32GB microSD, as its SDHC compatible.

ive decided poor battery life and lack of multi tasking would ruin it for me. main pro of getting one is how easy it will be to sync with my macbook compared to WM/android
