should i get a 965 125w or not?

hi

i'm thinking about getting a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 125w, i've been having few issues with my system and i think its my cpu... so i thinking of going back to a quad..

What kinda issues are you having?

Hvae you tried unlocking your current chip to turn it into a quad core?

I doubt very much that you would see much of a performance increase moving to the 965 from what you have atm.

random errors, random colour screens with lockups , ect. i know it's not ram because i bought a 2gb stick but still same, also i've know idea whats the real temp of the cpu, because the sensor isn't working right

my 720 won't unlock

It would be a real shame if you were to buy the 965 and still have the same issues.

Can't you try the chip out in another mobo?

Maybe it's because your O/C isn't stable that you are having these problems?

i don't have another motherboard to try it..

well the cpu was stable at 3.7ghz 1.4v then since i got the 5850 things started to go down hill,, i upped the cpu voltage to 1.425v which fixed for a week or 2 then it started again. so i droped everything to stock then everything was fine for 5-6days then it started doing it again..

also i've no idea whats the real temp of the cpu cores, because the sensor isn't working right

Hmmm, seems strange that the issues started happening after you got the 5850.

Have you tried using your previous GPU to see if the errors still happen?

Regarding the CPU temp, I have heard that certain BIOS'es can cause incorrect temp readings, if you haven't done already, you could try and update the BIOS to see if that sorts out the temp readings, if that doesn't fix it, then it is probably the temp sensor on the chip that is stuck, I don't think there is anything you can do about that though.

i sold my 2 4850 to get the 5850..

i've got the up to date bios version already on...

i do a lot on video stuff so thats another reason why im thinking about a quad.. as long as i can get it to 3.7ghz+

So something is breaking up.

Symptoms would fit quite well to something having been overvolted too much causing it to degrade.
But then again neither is Topower exactly high quality maker so would be worth of checking what caps they got from their grab bag to put into PSU and their condition.

Don't think he meant that your PSU isn't good enough, but maybe that it's faulty. This sounds similar to a problem I had a few years ago which was rectified by replacing the PSU. It's certainly worth testing with another if you can get your hands on one.

Sounds to me like an irq conflict after installing the 5850.

To eliminate this remove the soundcard and see if it still does it.

If everything is ok after you've taken the soundcard out,I'd try a full re-install of windows with the soundcard back in.

For stability I've found the Cat 9.10 driver to be about the best when using a soundcard instead of onboard sound.

Hope you get it solved.

but it can't be the psu because everything was fine when i had 2 4850, also 2 4850 uses more power than a 5850.

i've already tryed this mate.

what i'm thinking is ordering 965 as i do a lot of video stuff and see what happens also i'll keep the 720 as a spare..

it may not solve whatever issue it is that your having
the Phenom II X4 965 doesn't compete with the similar priced Core i5

At the very least I would spend a bit more time trouble-shooting before spending ££££, we all get hard-to-track-down glitches from time to time that make you tear your hair out but you have to man up and get down to business!

Would be good to get your PSU tested!

don't care about if intel cpus are faster. i prefer amd/ati, thanks

IF it doesn't sole the problem i wouldn't be losing anything really because as i said i do a lot of video stuff, also i would have a spare cpu..

also i've disabled 1 core to see if that helps, so far its working fine

Listen, if you assume *anything* when it comes to troubleshooting your gonna be in a world of pain. You have to test every single component to be sure!

I'm trying to help you, all my computers are working brilliantly and I don't have any hardware issues so I am spending my time trying to help those people who are stressing out with hardware issues . . .

i've just tryed a new 650w psu from a friend but it still does the same, i knew it wasn't the psu.. i've been using computers for about 23 years and been building them for 8-10 years but these issues i've never see before.

it's between the gpu or cpu.

Have you tried a differnt GPU .It could have been a problem caused by your 5850??

Would be good to nick/loan a spare CPU of a friendly overclocker if you think yours is suspect . . .swapping out components is a quick way to nail these elusive glitches although not everyone has spares . .

Can you be more specific about the errors, I'm not quite sure from what you have said? . . . . sounds like your PC was fine until your last GPU swap?

Is the system overclocked? did you try it at stock? . . is there any chance you bOrked the O/S> . . . . . are all the leads working fine, faulty SATA cable etc

Tell me are the BIOS settings on [Auto] or did you manually adjust some of them? . . .what is the CPU-NB voltage set to? . . .I had a slight rebooting under load issue when overclocking the Athlon II the first time, nailed it down to the CPU-NB not getting enough juice . .

Any more info you can give will be useful . . . :cool:
