Double parking - what would you do?

Has no one thought of the obvious? Smash the window and take the hand brake off. I've done it before.

Simples!

In Sheffield a few years ago the 47 48 bus route out of town went down a main road and then round a very tight side road. One day somebody had parked on the inside of the corner (double yellow). Bus was stuck for ten minutes (also blocking the main road), until about five people got out and bounced it out of the way, worked surprisingly well although the alarm did go off:D

Is their a wall right in front of the pavement, could you drive onto and down the pavement while nobody is about? (Engine might not have enough torque if the wheels are small)

The pavement's a few feet wide - possibly enough space to drive down, but it's not quite as simple as in the picture - it's more of a

shape. I couldn't get up on the kerb anyway (it was damp, the wheels just spun on the kerb) but even if I could have, and manoeuvred myself through 90º, I would've had to bump my way across several other dropped kerbs on my route out :(

Nothing behind it but 2 brackets (definitely won't take it and let the bumper back on), the boot (may take it and trap the spare wheel in the boot) and a fuel tank .

:(

Serious reply:

Have you called the police yet. Pretty sure it's an offence to block someone's access to a public road, hence why it's illegal to park in front of someone's driveway if there is a car on the driveway at the time.

I don't think it's the police's jurisdiction - it's not a public road AFAIK! :(

Just to clarify, I'm no longer trapped!

Engage low range, and select Reverse.

This works wonders with an HGV.... (and has done so in the past for me) I strongly advise you don't try this in a Car as they don't have steel girders for rear bumber bars. Ahem. ;) :D

Seriously, I hope the OP got sorted & he coated the offending car with brake fluid or similar.

No spare brake fluid/paint stripper :p although what with my car being some 10 years older than their car, I was severely tempted to reverse into her - maybe a good thing I didn't, if I would've come off worse!

In the end I went to a bar with a friend who works there and went back to security in a couple of hours, when lectures were supposed to have ended for lunch, who phoned her again and got hold of her this time. Although I didn't exchange any choice words with her :( the whole thing made me wonder what other options I had if I was in a proper hurry.

I don't think many people are going to risk a criminal damage charge in this scenario... I know I wouldn't.

In future just park in the rearmost part of the parking space. That way no annoying women who were probably too busy doing their make up at the time to realise it was actually just one space won't park right behind you. :)

That's fair comment, but say If I parked in the morning for a small amount of time, came back, I'm not gonna chance that this guy has buggered off for the whole of the day.

If your not in a rush, then get a friend to park behind them then wait for the owner to come out screaming when they cant go home.

Then just say you were in the same and have been waiting xx hours to get your car out.

Pinch/borrow a few dinner trays from the canteen, put one under each wheel using a jack/hired goons, then push the car out the way with your hands/car. :)

Excellent idea. I'd definitely consider that another time :D

Remember, next time park where the other car did and leave a gap infront of you ;)

That I will :p

There were CCTV cameras and breaking in was never really an option (except maybe with a coathanger), although they did deter from the reverse and push policy. She already had one wingmirror snapped off though

Hmm, this would nearly work with the minor difficulty of there being no space between my car and their car to push at the front. Also, what's the chances of their alarm going off? (Presuming '55 Golfs come with alarm as standard :p) As I'm guessing it's pretty certain if you start doing that with the car!

Set the alarm off, might make the owner more likely to come out.

Come on ethos this is a forum of car enthusiasts surely; smashing the window, cutting the handbrake cable, jacking it up then kicking it of the jack, ramming it with a car / truck and finally covering it with brake fluid are all reasonable responses to the (very inconsiderate) inconvinience of getting your car blocked in

I do wonder about some of the people on here at times.
