Nissan GTR

GTR for me every day of the week, hate porkas so much

My cousin said this to me, a Scottish lad so he had the Scottish chip on the shoulder and also a biker of 25 years plus, so most cars were crap but especially the 911 as it was simply a posers pouch not a proper car like an Aston or Jag. Quick blast cross country changed that opinion forever as it turns out he'd never been in a 911 let alone driven one. I can't reason with hate as again I'm sure you have your reasons but the vast majority of people who hate the 911 have an alterer motive for doing so, usually to do with the perception they have of the owners or long held abuse as a child by someone with a beetle. They don't CONSTANTLY win drivers car awards and haven't done so for years to simply spite the detractors as some seem to think, there is a good reason for it. How any petrol head worth their salt could hate a GT3 as an experience is beyond me and if the reason is badge, image, popularity, blandness of design or other such aesthetic reason I don't think they can truly warrant the term petrol head. Sure its a flawed design in many ways but that is half of the appeal I think. It simply should be utter bobbins and it really isn't.

Same applies to the GT-R too as a matter of interest, how could a petrol head not appreciate what a fantastic tour de force Nissan have created.

All very true but I can't say I personally really like either of them. I appreciate them for what they are but if was was spending that amount of money on a car I can't say either would be top of the list.

On the GT3 though, I have to say the 996 variety was rather underwhelming all round IMO. I think there's an argument to say Porsche have only really started getting it right with the 997, doesn't detract from the fact they have built some great cars through the years though. A 993 turbo is still on my list of cars to own.

You can't have driven a 6 GT3 if you feel that.....or you had your tuds and feeling removed at birth. ;)

Time for a sweeping statement.
I'd bet that less than 1% of owners of either car were capable of getting them around the 'ring in anything resembling either of those times.
I own an expensive fountain pen.....but can I write anything as worthy as a Shakespear sonnet? No, of course I can't because simply having the proper tools at hand doesn't suddenly make you an expert with the ability to eek out every last grain of potential from it.
The same is true with these cars.
So the GTR was quicker around the 'ring.
Well I'll take the GTR around the place again and go back to back with whoever it was who drove that 911 and guess what? He'd crucify my time.

I have but was fortunate enough to follow that with a drive in a CSL. It was a no brainer for me. In every way the CSL made me feel like a boy again. In the GT3, I got the feeling I was driving a £50k+ car and that was nice but, meh. It was comfort sepc'd though.

Never been in an RS though. That may sway my feelings slightly!

Most people getting into a 6 GT3CS and GT3RS wouldn't feel any difference but both (as is the comfort which means softer seats and a little more sound deadening nowt else) are a somewhat rawer car than a CSL. I love the CSL but chose the GT3 as it felt much more sharp and special. Having said this I LOVE the CSL too and think its engine sound is second to none though having driven a couple recently I forgot how light the steering was.

I guess that's the benefit of actually living with a car for a period of time. You only really get a gut feel in a 10 minute spell.

I actually think everyone should be forced to own a CSL. That engine opens up parts of your mind other things don't! It's next on my list after this bloody recession nonsense.

I would test drive both and form my own opinion if I was in that position.

Whoa there cowboy, making an informed decision? Save yourself some time and just read the opinions of those who haven't sat in either, let alone driven one.

Well said.

GTR forums bizarely seem to be inhabited by 15 year olds judging by the way they are gloating.

Nagtroc is pretty bad but to be fair, check out the 6speed forums for the most blinkered Porsche love/GT-R hate threads available, usually not the 996/997 owners but the bargain basement Porsche drivers who spout off...amusing sometimes:D

Regarding the Ring time, it is worth its weight in gold for obvious reasons, perception would be if it is faster round there, it is probably faster on the road. The time is not there for mortals to match, just to showcase the cars potential and sell units.

Do both cars get you from A to B ?

I would take any for free, they are obviously well built and designed cars, I would only judge if I had owned each car for a few years.

I like the way they have made it so you read ON! and its in red and the GTR is in red so you automatically know the GTR is awesome.

I think there both great cars, and ring times are largely irrelevant as there not done same day and the ring conditions vary so much to make most comparisons pointless.

It would be good if Nissan, porsche and others would all get together on one day and run all there cars at the same time, each company could check over the oppositions car and check if its all in spec compared to each other as there is always some "optimisations" going on from most manufacturers and would keep them all honest and be better for a real comparison.
But i doubt they would ever do that.

I love both of these, but the 911 Turbo is nearly twice as expensive as the GTR, even the 911 4S is 25-30K more than the GTR.

It really is an astonishing car, especially for the price.

However, i'd pick the Porsche every time.

Heres a pic some of you may like, this was taken in july whilst i was on holiday in switzerland, as you can imagine switzerland is very scenic and stunningly beautiful, i stumbled across this and a viper, and some american classic cars.
I thought this was my best pic of the holiday which did,nt go down well with my girlfriend.
